The woman holding dividers over an open book with diagrams has been identified as Circe or Melissa, but is probably a more generic sorceress surrounded by symbols of her dark magic: skulls, a bat, and a chimera (a fantastical winged creature). The representation in the left foreground of a coati, a member of the raccoon family native to South America, is unique in early modern painting and was probably based on an animal living in a private zoo in Genoa.. The Annunciation Hans Memling Netherlandish ca. 1465-70 One of the largest surviving depictions of the Annunciation, this imposing painting was most likely commissioned by Ferry de Clugny, whose family coat of armsthe two joined keysdecorates the carpet and stained-glass window. In 1465, Ferry founded the Chapelle Dorée as his burial site in the Saint-Lazare cathedral at Autun and lavishly decorated it with artworks, probably including this panel. The composition is based on a design by Rogier van der Weyden. Possibly commissioned before his death in 1464, it was painted by Memling, who, technical evidence suggests, was a journeyman in Rogier's Brussels workshop before establishing himself in Bruges in 1465. Emblem of Folly Unknown After Boetius Adams Bolswert Netherlandish 18th Century The unusual subject of this painting is taken from an emblem book, the Pia Desideria, written by the Dutch Jesuit, Herman Hugo (1588-1629), and illustrated with 46 engravings by Boetius Adams Bolswert (1580-1633). First published in Antwerp in 1624, the Pia Desideria is known in more than 150 editions and translations, making it one of the most popular books of the 17th century. The painting, following an emblem by Bolswert, depicts a confrontation between Anima (the human soul), who appears as a fool, and the winged figure of Amor divina (Divine Love). Anima, wearing a red foolscap adorned with feathers and bells, races about on a hobby horse waving a windmill toy in the air and carrying a cat in a basket (a symbol of lasciviousness). Amor covers her face in shame and points heavenward. A scriptural motto from Psalm 68 inscribed at the feet of the two figures clarifies the meaning of the scene: Deus tu sci

Man Handing a Letter to a Woman in the Entrance Hall of a House. The door and window of this entrance hall in an Amsterdam canal house are wide open. Daylight falls on a young woman receiving a letter. Pieter de Hooch cleverly linked the interior with the exterior. Our gaze moves past the little dog to the canal, on the opposite side of which two men converse and a woman at awindow looks towards us. The gateway seen through the right window affords an even more distant view.
