The initial sketch was executed with red ink, and then later Yoshitoshi drew over it with black. He authenticated this drawing by putting his seals in red at the left and right margins, suggesting that this particular one was important to him.

The Sun, plate 44 from Planets and Spheres 1460-1470 Italy. These so-called tarot cards were probably used as teaching toolsópamphlets or sets of flashcardsó for noblemen or students. They instilled the traditional hierarchies of society and philosophy in five ascending series Ranks and Conditions of Men, Apollo and the Muses, Arts and Sciences, Planets and Spheres, and Genii and Virtues. Artists also reused figures from these engravings in their art. The tarrochi are sometimes found bound as books, reinforcing their educational content. Men Preparing Some Sort of Intoxicant in the Country. Dimensions: H. 6 1/4 in. (15.9 cm)W. 5 in. (12.7 cm). Date: mid-17th century.Gatherings of dervishes preparing and partaking of intoxicants in the countryside were popular in Iran from about 1615 until the mid-17th century. At least five figures in this composition are based on earlier versions of this scene. However, the scribe and his companion at the lower left are unique to this drawing and introduce the notion of figures who witness but do not participate in the activities of the dervishes.
