The Canon from Dance of Death (Lyons), 1538, 1523-1526, Hans Holbein the Younger, German, 1497-1543, 2 9/16 x 1 7/8 in. (6.51 x 4.76 cm) (image), Woodcut, Germany, 16th century, Hans Holbein's Dance of Death is the most famous treatment of the subject in Renaissance art. His series of 50 miniature woodcuts show Death's affinity for all stations in life, royal and religious officials not excepted. Holbein's highly animated images remained unpublished for 15 years. Perhaps they were considered too inflammatory during the 1520s, a period of class warfare when even peasants rejected the notion of the divine right of kings.

Illustration depicting girandoles: these were elaborate set pieces which were hung from ropes on feast days in Italian cities, particularly in Tuscany. A wooden frame was padded with hay. Figures were constructed in the same way, but with Plaster-of-Paris heads, hands and feet and dressed in painted cloth. In this way a fabulous tale or historical scene was built up. Fireworks were placed all over the structure, including squibs and rockets. A really large piece would contain as many as 3,000 fireworks. Dated 16th century
