The Witches 1510 Hans Baldung (called Hans Baldung Grien) German A masterpiece of German chiaroscuro, this woodcut is one of Hans Baldung Grien's best known prints, produced soon after his move to Strasbourg from Nuremberg, where he had worked as a journeyman with Albrecht Dürer from about 1503 to 1507. Although Baldung was not the inventor of the chiaroscuro woodcutthe credit for this must go to Hans Burgkmairhe was among the very earliest and most effective practitioners of the medium.The tone block for this woodcut is sometimes printed in an orange-brown, casting a hellish glow onto the scene; here the use of a gray tone block creates an atmosphere of nocturnal gloom from which the three witches emerge, gathered around the steaming cauldron of "flying unguent." The flickering highlights, where the white of the paper is exposed, give three-dimensional presence to forms that would otherwise be engulfed by the dark setting and, by continuing the modeling of the dark hatching strokes,

Triumph of Caesar Made 1599 Italy. Andrea Andreaniís Triumph of Caesar was available in several color schemes, including gray and orange. Each chiaroscuro sheet included a range of shades of a single hue, one for each tone block, which combined to give the final image a greater sense of depth and the appearance of a drawing. The set of woodcuts was issued with a title page showing Andrea Mantegnaís portrait and with a set of columns (lacking in this impression) to cut out and paste over the seams in the assembled frieze. (15.24 x 12.38 cm) (image), Engraving, Germany, 15th-16th century, According to legend, the nobleman Dioscurus was so afraid that a suitor would captivate his beloved daughter Barbara that he shut her away in a tower. She managed to convert to Christianity by corresponding with a teacher in Alexandria, which infuriated her father, who was a heathen. As punishment he cut off her head, a fate that Master MZ shows her enduring with a martyr's grace. This print demonstrates the peculiarities that scholars invariably associate with his work, including oddities of scale and stiff, awkward poses.

The Temptation of Eve, 1535-55. Jean Mignon (French), after Luca Penni (Italian, 1500/04-1557). In the 1540s Italian artist Luca Penni worked at the French king François Is court at Fontainebleau. He created this image of the temptation of Eve (etched by Jean Mignon) by directly quoting Michelangelos figure of Eve from the Fall of Man scene on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The twisting serpent around the tree and the figure of Adam to the left—though altered from Michelangelos original—are still reminiscent of the earlier composition. Penni added his own unique elements, such as a landscape scene with animals and a decorative border featuring grotesques, cornucopias, and scrollwork.

There is a closed book in her lap and she holds a caliper, or compass. She is surrounded by other objects that reflect Albrecht Dürers profound interest in geometry, proportion, calculation, and measurement, such as a scale, an hourglass, a bell, a numeric chart, and a table with numbers. Chiaroscuro woodcut; Commissioned by Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga, this series of chiaroscuro woodcuts reproduces Andrea Mantegnas Triumph of Julius Caesar, painted a century earlier. The scenes imaginatively portray the triumphal procession of the renowned Roman general and consul Julius Caesar following his successful defeat of Gaul in 52 BC. Each section of the continuous frieze shows elements typical of these parades, sanctioned by the Roman Senate and described in ancient texts. The printed suites frontispiece features a portrait bust of Mantegna, and the text below boasts that the famous paintings attracted many viewers.
