Transforming what was a relatively staid and unthreatening image in earlier illustrated Bibles, Dürer injects motion and danger into this climactic moment through his subtle manipulation of the wood block. The parallel lines across the image establish a basic middle tone, against which the artist silhouettes and overlaps the powerful forms of the four horses and riders--from left to right, Death on his pale horse, Famine with his scales, War carrying a sword, and Plague (or Pestilence) with his bow and crown. Palumba's woodcut follows Virgil's description (Aeneid 5.250-57) of a cloak embroidered with a depiction of the Trojan prince's abduction while hunting on Mount Ida. As Virgil writes, as the beautiful youth is born aloft in the eagle's talons, his guardians stretch their hands in vain to Heaven and the barking of his dogs rises to the skies. A King Pursued by a Unicorn, c. 1555, Jean Duvet, French, 1485 - 1570, 9 3/16 x 15 5/16 in. (23.34 x 38.89 cm) (image), Engraving, France, 16th century, The myth of the unicorn likely grew out of ancient sightings of the Indian rhinoceros, the only true one-horned animal. Unicorns were popular in French art, appearing in tapestries and paintings in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Jean Duvet created a series of unicorn prints apparently inspired by the lifelong love between King Henri II and his mistress, Diane de Poitiers. These two chaotic prints illustrate the ferocious side of the creature as he resists capture, and his saintly demeanor in the presence of a virgin, who alone has the power to tame him.

The artist Jean Duvet in the guise of St. John the Evangelist, sitting at a desk ca. 1546-55 Jean Duvet French Jean Duvet was a French goldsmith, engraver, and festival designer who worked in the provincial cities of Langres and Dijon. He began his career as a printmaker by copying the prints of the Italian artist Marcantonio Raimondi. He assimilated these influences and also the work of other artists such as the prints of Albrecht Dürer and the etchings of Fontainebleau. In doing so Duvet developed a highly personal manner of engraving, seen to best advantage in his famous 'Unicorn' and 'Apocalypse' series to which this print belongs.
