Preventing Beach Erosion Palm Beach Florida USA

Native vegetation is being planted in a portion of the restored dunes at the north beaches at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Oct. 8, 2018. About 450,000 cubic yards of beach-quality sand, tested for compatibility, is being transported to the space centers beaches. Once the dune is built up, native vegetation will be replanted, helping to stabilize the dune and offer a habitat for Kennedys coast wildlife. Dunes are affected by beach erosion and storm surge from tropical events, such as hurricanes. Restoration began in spring 2018 and is targeted to be completed by April 2019.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster visits the coastal areas of South Carolina most affected by Hurricane Ian aboard a South Carolina Army National Guard UH-60 helicopter assigned to 59th Aviation Troop Command, South Carolina, Oct. 1, 2022. The purpose of the flight was to allow Governor McMaster to assess the damage on the coast between the Blue River-North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown-Charleston areas, as well as to meet with local authorities and emergency responders. Hurricane Ian made landfall in the proximity of Georgetown, South Carolina, just after 2 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 30, 2022, as a category 1 hurricane. The storm continued moving North-Northwest bound and became a post-tropical cyclone by the evening of the same day. Ian caused an estimated total of sixty-seven deaths in Florida, four in North Carolina, and none in South Carolina. Plant debris and ground erosion left behind by Hurricane Matthew affect a stretch of the NASA Railroad at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A portion of the line near the ocean was used during the Apollo era, although some portions were used to deliver commodities to the nearby Cape Canaveral Air Force Station through the end of the Titan program. NASA determined it was financially and ecologically advantageous to leave the tracks in place. Hurricane Matthew, a Category 3 storm, passed to the east of Kennedy on Oct. 6 and 7, 2016. The center received some isolated roof damage, damaged support buildings, a few downed power lines, and limited water intrusion. Beach erosion also occurred, although the storm surge was less than expected.
