A beach area is seen during a survey of NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Saturday. The survey was performed to identify structures and facilities that may have sustained damage from Hurricane Matthew as the storm passed to the east of Kennedy on Oct. 6 and 7, 2016. Officials determined that the center received some isolated roof damage, damaged support buildings, a few downed power lines, and limited water intrusion. Beach erosion also occurred, although the storm surge was less than expected. NASA closed the center ahead of the storms onset and only a small team of specialists known as the Rideout Team was on the center as the storm approached and passed.

Restoration efforts are underway to the dunes at the north beaches at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida in this view on April 15, 2019. About 450,000 cubic yards of beach-quality sand, tested for compatibility, was transported to the space centers beaches. Once the dune is built up, native coastal vegetation will be replanted, helping to stabilize the dune and offer a habitat for Kennedys coastal wildlife. Dunes are affected by beach erosion and storm surge from tropical events, such as hurricanes. Restoration began in spring 2018 and was targeted to be completed by April 2019.

Sand dunes provide natural coastal protection against storm surge and high waves, preventing or reducing coastal flooding and structural damage, as well as providing important ecological habitat. Matthew Schrader, a coastal engineer and planner with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Jacksonville District explained that before we knew about the key role that dunes played on our coastlines they were removed, and people even built on top of them. People didn't want the dunes because they blocked the ocean view. He said We have reports from the time that say dunes are unsightly and take up valuable recreation space. At one time, the dunes that were here were bigger."Celebrating Earth Day is a nudge, a friendly reminder, that without Earth, without nature, we would have no place to call home and that by preserving nature and protecting the Earth, we are in turn, protecting ourselves.

GRAND ISLE, La. - Crews start early cleaning oil from a Grand Isle beach May 21, 2010. Cleaning crews are ready to respond when reports of oil hitting shores are received and confirmed.
