The War of the Oranges (May-July 1801). 'The Oranges of Elvas'. Spain and France were allied against Great Britain by the Treaty of San Ildefonso. Portugal allowed British ships to use Portuguese ports. Napoleon, in war against the British, forced Charles IV to declare war on Portugal. Badajoz became the headquarters of a military contingent under the command of the Spanish Prime Minister Godoy. This army entered Portugal, conquering the city of Olivenza and part of the Alentejo, which forced the Portuguese soldiers to take refuge in the forts of Elvas (Yelves) and Campomayor. During the capture of Elvas (Yelves), the Spanish soldiers cut bouquets of oranges from its gardens and presented them to Godoy as a prize for the victory. Godoy offered them to Queen Maria Luisa. Andrzej Tadeusz Kociuszko 1746 1817) was a Polish-Lithuanian military leader during the Kociuszko Uprising. He is a national hero in Poland. Before commanding the 1794 Uprising, he had fought in the American Revolutionary War as a colonel in the Continental Army.

Uprising of the Tyrolese in 1809. This striking plate is from the painting by the famous German artist, Defregger, who was born in the Tyrol, and paints with enthusiasm the sturdy figures of his countrymen. Napoleon in his wars tried to make the Tyrolese peasants change their allegiance from Austria to Bavaria. They refused and, though finally overwhelmed, defeated army after army that was sent against them. We see them receiving with grim revolve the news of the coming of another force.

War of Roussillon, also called War of the Pyrenees or War of the Convention, (1793-1795). Conflict between the Spain of Charles IV and the First French Republic. Neither France nor Spain could continue the war, the treasury situation did not allow it. The French Convention appointed Barthelemy and Spain appointed Domingo Iriarte so that, meeting in Basel, they could sign a peace treaty. Domingo Iriarte insisted that the son of King Louis XVI be handed over to the King of Spain. Request from the Spanish court in favour of the sons of Louis XVI. Engraving.
