Altar Frontal Depicting Scenes from the Life of Christ Made 1575-1600 Seo de Urgel. Silk, warp-float faced broken warp chevron twill weave with supplementary pile warps forming cut solid velvet; appliquÈd with linen, plain weave, silk and gilt and silvered wire, plain weave with twill interlacing of secondary binding warps and patterning wefts; silk and silvered wire, twill weave; embroidered with silk, gilt- and silvered-metal-strip-wrapped silk and gilt and silvered wire in overcast, satin, padded satin, split, and stem stitches; laid work, couching, and padded couching; semi-precious stones; edged with woven fringes .

. Gold leather in jobs. The gold punched fond is painted with refreshments of seed beads and S and C-Volutes, within which Flower vases. Fruits and flower branches are still applied at the bottom of fruits and flower garlands with birds. The painting is executed in different shades of gray, red, green and blue.

August from a set of Medallion Months ca. 1525-28 Possibly after a design by the workshop of Bernard van Orley Netherlandish Like the Ages of Man tapestries (also on display in this gallery and perhaps designed in the same artist's workshop), the subject of this tapestry explores the cyclical nature of time. Embodying August, a laborer, winnowing grain from a shallow basket, has discarded his outer clothing under a hot, harvest sun. Another threshes corn. Above the landscape vista, Ceres, Goddess of the Harvest, observes the scene. A Zodiacal belt encloses this medallion, with Virgo triumphant. Pairs of women with hourglasses separate the signs, whilst the background shifts from bright daylight through dusk to dark night, thence back through dawn to day. In the upper corners are SEGESSA (Segesta), goddess of the standing crop, and CUCULINA (Tutulina), protector of stored grain. The Camel from a set of five Grotesques designed ca. 1688, woven ca. 1690-1711 Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer Presenting musicians, acrobats, and exotic animals within a fanciful architectural setting, this tapestry is from a set known as the Berain Grotesques, in reference to the pervasive stylistic influence of Jean Berain (1640-1711), who may even have provided preliminary sketches. The lighthearted subject matter and whimsical design contrast with the heavier, ornate style that had characterized French tapestry during the third quarter of the seventeenth century. The series enjoyed immense popularity during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, and the Beauvais workshop produced many weavings for French clients.. "Bellini" Carpet 16th-17th century The center of this carpet presents a pointed arch drawn as a triangle that evokes a mihrab, and Islamic prayer niche indicating the direction of Mecca. In the lower part is an octagonal motif thought to be a horseshoe arch, probably introduced to Ottoman art from Nasrid Spain through the emigration of Sephardic Jews beginning in the late fifteenth century. Textiles likes this one have come to be known as "Bellini" carpets, after the Venetian Renaissance artists Giovanni and Gentile Bellini, whose paintings depict similar weavings as floor coverings under the Madonna's feet.. Hanging with Dionysian Figures 5th-7th century Leafy tendrils frame twelve (originally fifteen) busts of satyrs, maenads, and others who attended the wine god Dionysos during his thiasoi, or revels. His tutor, Silenus is the bald man at the lower right. Herakles appears as the bearded man at upper left. The two figures with horns in the second row may be Pan and one of his sons who, according to Nonnus of Panopolis, assisted Dionysos in his conquest of India. The women are amongst the maenads who attended him. These mythological figures are typical of the continuity of interest in classical learning and culture in the Byzantine world, including Egypt.. Shepherd and Shepherdesses ca. 1500-1530 South Netherlandish In this tapestry we witness the antics of a shepherd and two shepherdesses in the fields. An older woman grabs a shepherd and he raises his hand in protest while a younger shepherdess, at the right, also raises her arm. It is not clear what is at issue here but tapestries focusing on the lives of shepherds generally have sexual overtones that would have been well understood at the time they were made. Don Quixote Tilting at Windmills, from Don Quixote in Grotesques” ca. 1674-76 Unknown Designer This wickedly comic tapestry belongs to a gloriously unconventional series that tells the Story of Don Quixote within a system of so-called ‘grotesque’ ornament. Exemplifying the finest of London’s tapestry weaving, made at the apex of the city’s foray into this industry in the third quarter of the seventeenth century, this piece is a truly original combination of narrative and pattern-making - elegant, imaginative, witty, with touches of burlesque. That it retains for the most part its spectacularly bright and colorful palette makes it still more desirable.Only three other surviving sets of this series are known (none of which are in public collections). Recent research has revealed that the series from which this comes is the only one that can be identified in contemporary archival documents. This was a royal purchase, bought by Charles II’s consort, Queen Catherine of Braganza, as a gift

The declining deer population at the time had forced hunters to seek alternative game such as foxes and other 'pests.

Tile panel with a Chinese landscape.This tile panel was probably part of a wall covering in a room in a palace. The decoration is remarkably bold. The figure of Guanyin (a Buddhist deity) at the upper right is based directly on a Chinese woodcut. The striking black figures represent Brazilian Indians and were added to make the scene more exotic.

Textile with Musicians 13th century The main decorative elements of this silk fragment are a row of large roundels enclosing two seated female musicians. Dressed in robes of patterned design, the figures are depicted playing tambourines. The lamp hanging between the figures suggests a luxurious interior setting. These large roundels are interlaced with a row of smaller ones containing stars. A rich shimmering effect is produced by the juxtaposition of the vivid reds and the lavish gold brocading. Silk textiles produced in Muslim royal workshops (tiraz) were found in Christian lands in medieval Iberia, whether created for Christian patrons or cut and refashioned entirely for new uses, such as ecclesiastic vestments or church furnishings. This fragment along with 14 others belonged originally to the same textile, and were discovered between the pages of a 13th century manuscript in the cathedral of Vich in Spain.. As recounted by the Roman writer Ovid in Book 2 of his narrative poem, The Metamorphoses, Mercury spied Herse participating, as a flower-garlanded virgin, in a festival honoring Minerva, and approached her fathers palace. Mercury petitioned her sister, Aglauros, to help him woo Herse. Stricken with jealousy, Aglauros envisioned in great detail how the union between Mercury and her sister might appear.
