Young Women of Sparta (Jeunes filles de Sparte) Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (French, 1796-1875). Young Women of Sparta (Jeunes filles de Sparte), 1868-1870. Oil on canvas, 16 3/4 x 29 7/16 in. (42.5 x 74.8 cm). Along with 42.196, this painting of a pale, contemplative young woman dressed in garments that conjure past times or distant places exemplifies Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corots practice as a figure painter. This painting portrays the model Mlle Darmelas wearing the traditional attire of the Italian town of Albano and gazing pensively into space. In the other, a favorite model, Emma Dobigny, reclines in a theatrical “gypsy” costume, while a trio of maidens in the background dance or perhaps engage in a physical contest reflecting the athleticism for which ancient Sparta was renowned. For Corot such costumes were interchangeable referents for imagined worlds, as well as opportunities to explore color, pattern, and texture in delicate touches of paint. European Art 1868-1870

The Peaceable Kingdom Edward Hicks (American, 1780-1849). The Peaceable Kingdom, ca. 1833-1834. Oil on canvas, 17 7/16 x 23 9/16 in. (44.3 x 59.8 cm). In this Edenic scene inspired by a passage from the Book of Isaiah, Edward Hicks visualized the peaceful coexistence of Gods creatures, depicting animals and children in the right foreground along with a vignette in the background of William Penns treaty with the Lenape. Hicks idealized the encounter between British colonists and Indigenous people, creating fictions of harmony. Ultimately, the Lenape were forced out of Pennsylvania owing to fraudulent land deals perpetrated by Penns sons. American Art ca. 1833-1834

Brueghel's satirical comment reflects the collapse of 'Tulipomania' in the 1640s. In the painting, speculators are depicted as brainless monkeys in contemporary upper-class dress. In a commentary on the economic folly of Tulipomania, one monkey urinates on the previously valuable plants, others appear in debtor's court and one is carried away to the grave. Tulip mania or tulipomania (Dutch names include: tulpenmanie, tulpomanie, tulpenwoede, tulpengekte and bollengekte) was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which contract prices for bulbs of the recently introduced tulip reached extraordinarily high levels and then suddenly collapsed. At the peak of tulip mania, in February 1637, some single tulip bulbs sold for more than 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman.
