The early 1900s caption reads: "Portrait of Lady and Child by Reynolds (1723-1792) in the National Gallery. This portrait was purchased in 1871 with the Peel collection and is said to represent the Hon Mrs Musters and her son. The composition does not show Sir Joshua at his best, and the painting is perhaps rather thin. The identity is not very clearly established, although the names of Mr. and Mrs. Musters are to be found in Sir Joshua's account books." Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was the leading English portraitist of the 18th century. Through study of ancient and Italian Renaissance art, and of the work of Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck, he brought great variety and dignity to British portraiture.

Portrait of Carolina Frederica Kerst, Wife of Louis Royer. Charles van Beveren painted the sculptor Louis Royer and his wife after the couple had returned from Italy. Royer sits in his studio, surrounded by the works he produced during his years in Rome. These were purchased by the Dutch state on his return. Two of these sculptures are displayed in this gallery. Works by Royer also appear in the background of his wifes portrait.

She sat for Reynolds four times in the month preceding her marriage on June 13, 1764, to John Stewart, Lord Garlies, later seventh earl of Galloway.
