The Bassae Frieze comprises a series of relief marble sculptures from the Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassae, Greece. It was discovered in 1811 by Carl Haller and Charles Cockerell. From the style of the frieze it belongs to the High Classical period, probably carved around 400 BC.

This line drawing from 1898 shows the Greek goddess Athene (also spelled Athena) - holding the shield. This grouping was part of the altar frieze at Pergamon. Pergamon was an ancient city in Asia Minor ( present-day Turkey). The altar at Pergamon (also spelled Pergamum) was built in the second half of the second century B.C. The ruler at that time was Eumenes II. Tondeur is credited with the restoration.

An inscription at the centre of the lid informs us that this trough-shaped sarcophagus was dedicated to a woman named Arria, who lived fifty years and ten months, by her daughter Aninia Hilara. Endymion was been granted eternal youth and eternal sleep.

Three youths wearing cloaks lead four rams. A fragment probably belongs to the body of the first. The other two are conversing while resting one hand on the back of the animals they are leading to sacrifice. Behind them is a marshal. He turns back to face the procession. Travertine cinerary urn 2nd century B.C. Etruscan The reclining woman on the lid holds a fan in her right hand and a pomegranate in her elongated left hand. The frieze below depicts the murder of a woman, perhaps Ismene, youngest child of Oedipus and sister of Antigone, or perhaps the Matricide of Alkmene, mother of Herakles. At least twenty other urns, most from Volterra, have been attributed to the same workshop, the so-called Officina di Poggio alle Croci. Engaged Capital, 1400s. Southern France, Abbey of Larreule, near Tarbes, 15th century. Limestone; overall: 40.4 x 53.3 x 39.4 cm (15 7/8 x 21 x 15 1/2 in.). This capital belongs to a surviving group including other architectural fragments that once decorated the cloister of the Abbey of Larreule. A cloister was a covered walkway or arcade, usually around all four sides of a square area of grass (the "cloister garth"). The seclusion of the cloister was the monks exclusive domain, off limits to others. Here, the monks were supposed to pray, study, meditate, and exercise in privacy and solitude. Such cloister capitals served both to instruct the monks and as a focus for their devotions. Other capitals in this series are installed in the Jardin Massey at Tarbes, near the original abbey. An arch from Larreule has been assembled with other associated French capitals at The Cloisters in New York.

Date: mid-2nd century A.D..Found on the Via Ardeatina, on the outskirts of RomeThe myth of Endymion, a beautiful shepherd who was so loved by the moon goddess Selene that she gave him eternal youth with eternal sleep, became a popular funerary motif in Roman art. Here, the moon goddess alights from her chariot to visit her reclining lover. Both this sarcophagus and another that faces the open area with a fountain in the courtyard, are decorated with this subject. It isinteresting to compare the relief technique; on this mid-second century A.D. work, the relief is shallow, while the other sarcophagus, dated to the early third century, has deep carving with strong light and dark effects created by much use of the running drill.
