The Book of Kells (Irish: Leabhar Cheanannais) (Dublin, Trinity College Library, MS A. I. (58), sometimes known as the Book of Columba) is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament together with various prefatory texts and tables. It was created by Celtic monks ca. 800 or slightly earlier. The text of the Gospels is largely drawn from the Vulgate, although it also includes several passages drawn from the earlier versions of the Bible known as the Vetus Latina. It is a masterwork of Western calligraphy and represents the pinnacle of Insular illumination. It is also widely regarded as Ireland's finest national treasure. The illustrations and ornamentation of the Book of Kells surpass that of other Insular Gospel books in extravagance and complexity. The decoration combines traditional Christian iconography with the ornate swirling motifs typical of Insular art. Figures of humans, animals and mythical beasts, together with Celtic knot

The Man of Sorrows. Culture: Italian. Dimensions: Overall: 4 1/8 x 3 1/8 x 1/16 in. (10.4 x 8 x 0.2 cm). Date: last quarter 14th century.A monk and a hooded figure, his back bared so that he can whip himself in penitence, kneel before a dreamlike vision of Jesus rising from his tomb. This plaque, with an inscription naming the society of Saint Dominic, was probably intended for private prayer by a member of a Dominican brotherhood.Focus on the crucified Christ and his suffering was widespread in the 1300s. Pope John XXII (reigned 1316-34) declared that the Imago pietatis should be evoked during the celebration of the Mass. Pope Innocent VI (reigned 1352-62) affirmed that devotion to the Instruments of the Passion would reduce punishment for sin after death; seen here are the vinegar-soaked sponge that was offered to Jesus on the cross and the lance that pierced his side. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Manichaeism was one of the major Iranian Gnostic religions, originating in Sassanid Persia. Although most of the original writings of the founding prophet Mani (c. 216-276 AD) have been lost, numerous translations and fragmentary texts have survived. Manichaeism taught an elaborate cosmology describing the struggle between a good, spiritual world of light, and an evil, material world of darkness. Through an ongoing process which takes place in human history, light is gradually removed from the world of matter and returned to the world of light from which it came. Its beliefs can be seen as a synthesis of Christianity, Zoroastrianism and Buddhism. Manichaeism thrived between the third and seventh centuries, and at its height was one of the most widespread religions in the world. Manichaean churches and scriptures existed as far east as China and as far west as the Roman Empire. Manichaeism survived longer in the east, and appears to have finally faded away after the 14th century in so

Abruzzo Pescara Loreto Aprutino S. Maria in Piano1. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Exterior views include: a portico with four arches, a tower, an ornately sculptured portal with a fresco of the Pieta in the lunette (1559). Views of the interior include: a stoup, 17th century wood pulpit, altar paintings, marble altar and baroque altarpiece with details of sculptures and paintings. Most views are of the 14th century frescoes. On the entrance wall is a curious scene of the Last Judgment: Christ in a mandorla sits enthroned among various saints, music-making angels, Virgins and Patriarchs; three saints kneel below him, one in bishops' robes and two in Capuchin habit; instruments of the Passion lay on a table. In the lower register, nude souls cross a bridge, are judged by St. Michael, and then climb up a palm tree to enter a house whereupon they are clothed and dance. Other frescoes include scenes of the life of St. Thomas (under which is much graffiti), and various saints such as St. Catherine o

Plaque with the Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew British ca. 1160-80 This rare and highly important plaque epitomizes a key moment in the history of medieval art, when goldsmithswho had traditionally used enamels only as a substitute for colored gemsrealized the full potential of the technique as a narrative art form. The theatrical nature of the Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew comes to life through the use of rich color, sure engraving, dramatic gestures and intense gazes. The artist represents compelling details as Jesus, standing at the edge of the Sea of Galilee, calls the brothers to be fishers of men: Peter gathers up his robe to keep it dry as he steps from the boat, while Andrew pushes with an oar against the waves. The acquisition of this Romanesque enamel significantly enriches The Cloisters Treasury, adding a rare example, attributed to England, to the Limoges and Mosan masterpieces already in the collection. Part of a larger ensemble focused on the lives of Saints Peter
