Date: ca. 1760.One of a few highly finished works painted by Fragonard during his first Italian sojourn, the canvas was painted between 1756 and 1761. It belonged to the Bailli de Bréteuil, who was ambassador to Rome from Malta. While the figure group reminds us that Fragonard was trained under Boucher, the intensity, the color harmonies, and the warm, dark atmosphere are his own. This painting from colonial Peru depicts the grounds of a country estate populated by privileged, peninsular Spaniards (people born in Spain) and members of the Creole elite (people of Spanish descent born in the Americas). They are accompanied by the Indigenous and African servants who dress, serve, and entertain them, thereby making the aristocrats leisure time possible. The unidentified artist completed this work in Lima, which was the capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru until that country gained its independence in the 1820s. While the white men wear suits fashionable at the time among cosmopolitan Europeans, their wealthy female counterparts dress in the characteristic native South American pollera ensemble, showing how the confluence of Indigenous and Spanish customs contributed to distinctive regional style

Cimon and Pero, Willem Drost (attributed to), c. 1655 - c. 1657 painting In the story of Cimon and Pero, which was already recorded in Roman antiquity by the Latin writer Valerius Maximus, the ultimate sacrifice and charity are central. The old Cimon was sentenced to hunger, but his daughter Pero who visited him in prison kept him alive by breastfeeding him in secret. The Amsterdam painter Willem Drost (1633-1659) shows the endearing moment in his painting that is known as the Caritas Romana. Young Pero turns her gaze, alert to her environment, while she secretly feeds her chained, weighted father. In all his vulnerability, the weakened, old man searches for the fabric of her skirt. The caption for this illustration reads: The Pea-hen turns into a maiden. According to the tale, a king had three sons and a tree that produced golden apples, but a thief stole them every night. Two of sons failed to catch him, third was able to outwit the thief: nine peahens would come down and eight pecked the apples, but the ninth turned into a beautiful princessas seen here. The princess gave the third prince two golden apples for the king. The illustration is from a 1921 book on Serbian myths and legends.

The Conservator's Eye Set in Manhattans Union Square, this scene captures the urban street types and bohemian artists who populated the neighborhood. Julian Alden Weir cut apart a larger composition titled In the Park sometime after it received harsh criticism at the 1879 Society of American Artists exhibition. One of three fragments, Union Square was cut in the shape of an oval and expanded into a rectangle through the addition of four spandrels, the triangular additions at the corners. Weir extended the composition onto the additions, filling in the sky and the bottom of the central figures fur muff. There is a tonal difference between the two generations of paint. This is because Weir matched the newer colors to a dirty varnish layer on the oval, which has since been cleaned away. American Art ca. 1879
