Between 1907 and 1909, George Wesley Bellows completed a series of four canvases devoted to the excavation of Pennsylvania Station in midtown Manhattan. In this version, laborers are dwarfed by the gaping pit they have created as they tear down the old New York in order to build it anew. The dark palette and vigorous brushwork, coupled with the chill winter atmosphere and billowing plumes of steam and smoke, lend additional drama to the scene. The painting has an infernal quality, suggesting the artists ambivalence about the rapid transformation of New York in the early twentieth century. Joshua Commanding the Sun to Stand Still Upon Gibeon (Joshua: 10: 12-14) ca. 1822 John Martin British The British painter and printmaker John Martin made his reputation with sublime scenes of vast spaces overwhelmed by classical architecture and countless figures. He made this drawing in preparation for the painting that launched his future successes: Joshua Commanding the Sun to Stand Still upon Gibeon (United Grand Lodge of England, London, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1816, reproduced in lithograph and two mezzotints in 1827). It shows Joshua, the Old Testament commander of the Israelite armies, standing on the rocky outcropping in the foreground. He commands the sun and moon to stop in their courses so that the Israelites may destroy their fleeing enemies-the Amorites, who had been attacking the city of Gibeon-in the prolonged daylight (Joshua 10:12-13).. The inlet in the foreground is the Golden Horn, with the Ottoman fleet.

Unusual light effects fascinated Joseph Wright, who knew several prominent English scientists investigating the nature of light and vision. After a trip to Italy in 1773-75, where he witnessed a violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius and a spectacular fireworks display at the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, Wright made sensational lighting effects the keynote of many of his landscapes.
