Catherine II, better known as Catherine the Great, proclaimed herself empress of Russia in 1762. German by birth, she married the future Peter III of Russia, who was the grandson of Peter the Great, in 1744. She made Poland a protectorate and Russia a superpower in the Middle East. This illustration, dating to 1899, is based on a painting by Aexandro Ossani (born c. 1827), who lived/was active in England and is known for his portrait paintings..
