Was a member of the House of Savoy and he claimed the thrones of Ethiopia and Albania as Emperor and King respectively. During his 46 year reign, his Kingdom was involved in two World Wars and encompassed the rise and fall of Italian Fascism. Victor Emmanuel abdicated his throne in 1946.

On October 9, 1918, after the First World War was lost, he abdicated, at the request of the Chancellor, Prince Max of Baden, the imperial crown and retired to Doorn Castle, in Holland. , where he died in 1941.
