Pibulsongkram was one of the leaders of the military branch of the People's Party that staged a coup d'état and overthrew Thailand's absolute monarchy in 1932. In 1938, Pibulsonggram replaced Phraya Phahol as Prime Minister. Pibulsonggram began to increase the pace of modernisation in Thailand. By manipulating the mass media, Pibulsonggram supported fascism and nationalism. In 1939, Pibulsonggram changed the country's name from Siam to Thailand. In 1941, in the midst of World War II, he decreed January 1 the official start of the new year instead of the traditional April 13. When the Japanese invaded Thailand on December 8, 1941, Pibulsonggram was reluctantly forced to order a general ceasefire after just one day of resistance. On December 12, Pibulsongkram signed a military alliance with Japan. The following month, on January 25, 1942, Pibulsongkram declared war on the allied powers. The Korean War (25 June 1950 - armistice signed 27 July 1953) was a military conflict between the Republic of Korea, supported by the United Nations, and North Korea, supported by the People's Republic of China (PRC), with military material aid from the Soviet Union. The war was a result of the physical division of Korea by an agreement of the victorious Allies at the conclusion of the Pacific War at the end of World War II. For twelve twlilight months Sergeant David Sharp, 25 (above), of the Northumberland Fusiliers, endured solitary confinement. It began in a rat-ridden cellar of a Korean temple, 10ft x 5ft. It continued in the cellar of a Korean jail. Forbidden to sing or whistle, each dragging day of semi-darkness was punctuated only by interrogations and unending threats. Not once for a whole year did he speak to a fellow countryman face to face. Yet, as the last British prisoner to cross to freedom. he stepped briskly down the gangway of the troopship Dilwara at Southampton to give the answer: "When I was in solitary, I thought of home."
