Colonel C. E. S. Wood 1891, cast 1897-98 Olin Levi Warner American After serving in the 21st Infantry Regiment during the Nez Percé War in 1877, Charles Erskine Scott Wood (1852-1944) became a crusader for Native American rights and eventually settled in Portland, Oregon. Wood met Warner about 1883 while he was studying law at Columbia University and became a major patron of for the last decade of Warners career. In 1886, through Woods auspices, the sculptor was awarded the commission for the Skidmore Fountain in Portland (installed 1888). Warner executed this relief portrait of Wood in 1891, during the last of his three visits to Portland. It is likely that the medallion was not a commission but rather a token of thanks to Wood for making the arrangements for Warner to model a series of portraits of Native Americans from the Columbia River region (06.314-.320). The boldly modeled profile portrait is accompanied by a personalized inscription “to my friend C. E. S. Wood.”. Colonel C.

St. Nicholas' Club Memorial: Washington Irving. Artist: Henry Kirke Bush-Brown (American, Ogdensburg, New York 1857-1935 Washington, DC). Dimensions: Diam. 7 in. (17.8 cm). Date: 1907.Bush-Brown attained recognition as a sculptor of public monuments, yet his facility with small-scale sculpture is evident in this medallion featuring a bust-length portrait of American writer and humorist Washington Irving (1783-1859). Irving's tousled hair and downward fixed gaze suggest that the author of "Rip van Winkle" is deep in thought. In 1835 Irving helped establish the Saint Nicholas Society, an organization founded to preserve and celebrate the history and customs of New York. It commissioned this commemorative portrait from Bush-Brown. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Mrs. Schuyler Van Rensselaer (Mariana Griswold) 1888, cast 1890 Augustus Saint-Gaudens American Mariana Griswold Van Rensselaer (1851-1934), an influential author, critic, and reformer, championed Saint-Gaudens in articles on his public monuments and relief sculptures. In this elongated portrait, the sculptor made full use of the textural possibilities of his medium by modeling the sitters dress and collar with lively surfaces that contrast with her smooth skin. The inscription animvs non opvs ("the spirit, not the work") refers to Van Rensselaers high-minded aesthetic ideals. The bronze is encased in a carved oak frame designed by Stanford White; the floral medallions on the frame cleverly echo those at the bottom of the relief.. Cameo with the Head of a Satyr late 18th or early 19th century probably Italian The tradition of representing satyrs on intaglios and cameos is an ancient one, stretching back at least as far as sixth-century Greece. This cameo, with its forced perspective and strong, unidealized image, belongs to a rather late stage in the evolution of the representation of the sylvan deity. It was probably made in Italy, the chief center of cameo production in the late eighteenth and nineteenth century, as it is today.Clare Vincent, The Jack and Belle Linsky Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1984, p. 189, no. 108.
