Portrait of a Young Man ca. 1760-65 Pompeo Batoni Italian Sitting for a portrait by Batoni almost became a rite of passage for wealthy Grand Tourists in Rome. This young mans identity remains unknown, but he was afforded the most luxurious format: a full-length portrait filled with the props Batoni used repeatedly in order to announce various aspects of a Grand Tour education, including a bas relief of Antinous, a statue of Minerva, an armillary sphere, guidebooks to ancient and modern Rome, a volume of biographies of painters, and a volume of Homer's Odyssey. Préparation for a Portrait of Louis XV (1710-1774) ca.1745 Maurice Quentin de La Tour French In the age of Enlightenment when the medium of pastel gained immense popularity, Maurice-Quentin de La Tour was perhaps its most gifted practitioner. He was distinguished from his peers by his ability to capture the inner spirit and intellect of his sitters. To achieve this end he developed a method of preparing his works through preliminary studies of the head, seen from different angles and with different expressions. Described by the French term préparation, these rapid drawings in pastel, often done on blue paper, showcase La Tours virtuoso talents. This pastel study was made as part of the preparatory process for La Tours first portrait commission of king Louis XV, exhibited in the 1745 Salon. Tench Francis 1746 Robert Feke Feke emerged during the 1740s as the most gifted native-born artist working in the Northeast. The subject of this portrait, the Irish-born Tench Francis (1690-1758), received legal training in England and emigrated to America in about 1720. He became the attorney general of Pennsylvania in 1741 and commissioned this portrait five years later. The picture is important as one of the few signed and dated works proving that Feke was active in Philadelphia in 1746. Thinly painted in elegant Rococo pastel colors but reflecting Quaker values in the sitter’s modest attire, the work represents Francis at the height of his career, as a pillar of society.. Diederik van Durven (1729-1730). The highest-ranking Dutch East India Company (VOC) official in Asia was the governor-general. He presided in the Castle of Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia), a fort built by the Dutch. The assembly hall in the Castle of Batavia was the centre of Dutch power in Asia. The walls were hung with portraits of all of the governors-general. Most of the 18th-century examples shown here were painted in Asia, often by anony¬mous artists.

Gustavus Hamilton (1710-1746), Second Viscount Boyne, in Masquerade Costume 1730-31 Rosalba Carriera Italian Gustavus Hamilton (1710-1746), who was Irish, succeeded in 1723 as Viscount Boyne. He and Edward Walpole, the second son of the powerful Whig prime minister Sir Robert Walpole, were in Venice from January to March 1730, enjoying the pleasures of the Carnival season, and Boyne was there again the following winter. There are three versions of the present portrait: the second (private collection) shows the sitter in an identical costume; in the third (Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham, England) he wears a brown brocaded coat. The hat, veil, and mask, worn outdoors with a black coat, is known to Venetians as the bautta and offered its wearer the advantage of anonymity..
