In history, Marko was a Serbian king who ruled from 1371 to 1395. He is the popular hero of Serbia epic poetry. King Vukasin was his father. His mother was Jevrosima. Marko was said to wear a wolf-skin cap, have a huge mustache, and be drapped in a cloak made of a shaggy wolf pelt. Legend tells of his exploits helping the weak and needy. Marko is also a hero in Bulgarian folklore. The caption for this 1923 illustration reads: They gagged Marko and bound him to his horse. This scene refers to the time the vizier's men found Marko sleeping and bound him and brought him to the vizier who had him

Album of Tournaments and Parades in Nuremberg late 16th-mid-17th century German, Nuremberg This 112-sheet manuscript includes depictions of contestants equipped for various tournaments; a parade preceding a late form of tournament called a carrousel; participants in tournaments known as Gesellenstrechen, or bachelors' jousts, held in Nuremberg between 1446 and 1561; and depictions of pageant sleighs, some of which were used in a parade held in the winter of 1640-41. The illustrations are probably the work of a Briefmaler, or letter painter, who also would have written and embellished official documents and painted coats-of-arms.In many instances, the names of the tournament participants are written above them. They are armed for the Gestech, the joust fought with blunt lances. A helmet and a four-pronged lance head similar to those in the album are also on display in gallery 373 (acc. nos. 29.156.67a, 42.50.40). Albums such as this provide an invaluable record of the jousters' colorful

This illustration, dating to 1920, shows the knight Palmerin's encounter with fairies at the edge of the woods. The Palmerin Romances is a chivalric romance attributed to the Portuguese writer Francisco de Moraes Cabral (c. 1500 to 1572). The series was particularly popular in England.

Saint Christopher. Artist: Follower of Hans Baldung Grien (Upper Rhine, third quarter of the sixteenth century). Culture: German, Upper Rhine. Dimensions: 9 15/16 x 6 7/16 in. (25.2 x 16.4 cm). Date: third quarter 16th century.Saint Christopher is known as the giant who carried the Christ Child across a river to safety. Here, he appears as a decrepit man bracing himself under the Child's extraordinary weight. The billowing drapery, with its bold, curvilinear folds, reveals the artist's attention to dramatic contrasts of light and shadow against the dark ground of the paper. This chiaroscuro drawing style recalls the work of the German artist Hans Baldung, and the work was likely made by one of his followers. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The story of Saint George and the Dragon appended to the hagiography of Saint George was Eastern in origin, brought back with the Crusaders and retold with the courtly appurtenances belonging to the genre of Romance. The earliest known depictions of the motif are from tenth- or eleventh-century Cappadocia and eleventh-century Georgia; previously, in the iconography of Eastern Orthodoxy, George had been depicted as a soldier since at least the seventh century. The earliest known surviving narrative of the dragon episode is an eleventh-century Georgian text. The dragon motif was first combined with the already standardised Passio Georgii in Vincent of Beauvais' encyclopedic Speculum Historiale, and then Jacobus de Voragine's Golden Legend (ca 1260) guaranteed its popularity in the later Middle Ages as a literary and pictorial subject. The legend gradually became part of the Christian traditions relating to Saint George and was used in many festivals thereafter.
