Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre (21 June 1905 - 15 April 1980) was a French philosopher, playwright, novelist, political activist, biographer, and literary critic. He was one of the key figures in the philosophy of existentialism and phenomenology, and one of the leading figures in 20th-century French philosophy and Marxism. Simone de Beauvoir (9 January 1908 - 14 April 1986), was a French writer, intellectual, existentialist philosopher, political activist, feminist and social theorist. Though she did not consider herself a philosopher, she had a significant influence on both feminist existentialism and feminist theory.

The Duke of Windsor married Simpson, in a private ceremony on 3 June 1937, at Chateau de Cande, near Tours, France. Edward VIII (1894 - 1972), King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire, and Emperor of India, from 20 January 1936 until his abdication on 11 December the same year, after which he became the Duke of Windsor. In 1936, a constitutional crisis in the British Empire arose when King-Emperor Edward VIII proposed to marry Wallis Simpson, an American socialite who was divorced from her first husband and was pursuing the divorce of her second. At Fort Belvedere, on 10 December, Edward signed his written abdication.
