Study for "The Ferry" after 1829 Peter De Wint British This small work shimmers with intensity. Bold, fluid strokes of watercolor-steel blue, purple-gray, pale brown, ochre, and raspberry-colored-mark the surface of the sheet, often blending together but occasionally standing crisply apart. As the small ferryboat crosses the lake, the water seems to reflect the sunlight in brief passages where the bright paper remains unpainted. The result is both painterly and sculptural and lends the scene a monumental effect. The distinctive watercolor style shown here changed little over the course of De Wint's long career.
