Date: 1843 and 1857.This Old Testament scene shows an angel in the sky hurling fire and brimstone down upon Sodom, to destroy the city for its wickedness. At the left, another angel leads Lot and his two daughters to safety. Behind them, Lot's wife, who looked back in regret despite a warning, has become a pillar of salt.Years after Corot exhibited the painting at the Paris Salon of 1844, he cut it down substantially, reducing the sky and the landscape at right. He repainted the foreground in a darker palette and exhibited the revised canvas at the 1857 Salon. By then his stature ensured a better reception from the critics. John Singer Sargent spent part of several summers painting open-air subjects in Italys Val dAosta. The resulting works reveal his pleasure in the description of vividly brilliant light. To suggest an alluring sensuality, Sargent often dressed his models in costumes that he had purchased in the Middle East. Here, several figures almost seem to merge with the water, enhancing the intimacy of the gathering. All three male figures were modeled by Nicola dInverno, Sargents servant, a fact that reveals the contrivances underpinning this seemingly casual scene. American Art ca. 1907

This painting portrays the model Mlle Darmelas wearing the traditional attire of the Italian town of Albano and gazing pensively into space. In the other, a favorite model, Emma Dobigny, reclines in a theatrical “gypsy” costume, while a trio of maidens in the background dance or perhaps engage in a physical contest reflecting the athleticism for which ancient Sparta was renowned.
