This painting, titled Ishmael, is by the English artist Jean Charles Gazin ( 1840-1901). The subject is dramatic: Abraham's wife Sarah demanded that he cast out from his dwelling the bondswoman Hagar, with Ismael, the son she had borne him. Abraham rose early in themorning and took bread, a bottle of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child and sent her away. She departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. Ad the water was spent in the bottle. Gazin loved simplicity in his landscapes and associated them with human feelings.

Herbert Alexander, the artists biographer, described the artists interpretation of nature as similar to that of a poet, suggesting rather than describing: "In watercolor and oil an effect of intricate detail is found on examination to be quite illusive—multitudinous form is conjured by finding and losing it in endless hide-and-seek till the eye accepts infinity."

The Belated Party on Mansfield Mountain 1858 Jerome B. Thompson Thompson earned a reputation for combining the breadth of Hudson River School landscape painting with the anecdotal appeal of contemporary genre painting. This work is one of several in which he used Mount Mansfield, Vermonts highest peak, as a foil for domestic recreation. As half the party of day trippers admire the summit and the vista toward Lake Champlain, another young man holds his watch aloft, warning of the lateness of the hour and the need to descend. The Watcher, Tynemouth 1882 United States. During his sojourn in England, from 1881 to 1882, Homer settled in the small fishing village of Cullercoats, located about two miles from the city of Tynemouth. He often drew and painted the women of the village, as they watched and waited on the shore, eyes always trained on the frequently treacherous sea. The Watcher, Tynemouth emphasizes the womanís loneliness and anxiety as she faces the raw forces of nature. Homer chose to represent the woman with her back to the viewer. She is clad in dark blue and reddish-brown clothing, and her face is obscured by a headscarf, so as to shield her from probing eyes. The muted palette of this watercoloróovercast blue-gray sky, murky green and blue wavesóexaggerates the stark whiteness of the foamy caps on the waves. Their peaks punctuate the horizon line, as do the sails of the two boats in the distance.. Transparent and opaque watercolor, with rewetting, blotting, and scraping, heightened with gum glaze
