Johann Martin von Rohden drew a lying tree trunk in the park of Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia in black chalk on gray paper at the beginning of the 19th century, emphasizing texture and form.

Richards first traveled to Europe in 1855, remaining abroad for a year and spending most of the time in Italy. Like so many artists before him, Richards was overjoyed to be in Florence: I have not as yet realized that I am in Italy that all the dreams of a boyhood are fulfilled.” Richards carried this small sketchbook on a walking tour in the Apennine mountains in October 1855. The carefully drawn vista shown here of the broad valley through which the Arno river winds reminded Richards, always quick to compare American and European landscape scenery, of the view of the Hudson from the Catskill Mountain House. Date: 1854-55.Whistler made his first etching while employed as a draftsman at the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in Washington, D.C., between 1854 and 1855. A staff member taught him the technique and supplied him with a copper plate, on which he etched topographic renderings of coastlines, then sketched freely drawn figures, and an oval vignette representing "Mrs. Partington and Ike"--characters from a Mark Twain story. The hooded hidalgo, or minor Spanish nobleman, at upper right is likely a self-portrait that hints at the artist's bubbling ambition. Martello Towers near Bexhill, Sussex (Liber Studiorum, part VII, plate 34) 1811 Designed and etched by Joseph Mallord William Turner British Turner distilled his ideas about landscape In "Liber Studiorum" (Latin for Book of Studies), a series of seventy prints plus a frontispiece published between 1807 and 1819. To establish the compositions, he made brown watercolor drawings, etched outlines onto copper plates, then usually employed professional engravers to develop tone. Here we see Turner's preliminary work on a plate that William Say later completed using mezzotint. Along a stretch of England's south coast, a road recedes towards a line of forts built to defend against a feared Napoleonic invasion. In the foreground a man and woman lead a donkey loaded with panniers and a child, as two hussars follow on horseback.
