Shepherds in a Landscape, 1779. Jean Baptiste Pillement (French, 1728-1808). Pastel; unframed: 46.3 x 60.5 cm (18 1/4 x 23 13/16 in.). The exquisite handling of the pastel, crisp and colorful in the foreground while of the greatest subtlety in the atmospheric distance, bears out Pillement's reputation as the best 18th-century French artist of the pastel landscape. Landscapes in this period were most often picturesque creations, rather than literal transcriptions of nature. In this dramatically irregular countryside, shepherds, flocks, and rustic buildings create an air of idealized rural charm.

A Shaded Avenue ca. 1775 Jean Honoré Fragonard French Fragonard was a gifted landscapist who combined his knowledge of earlier Dutch painting, notably the dramatic light effects and craggy trees of artists like Jacob van Ruisdael, and his experience in Italy, including its formal gardens and ancient ruins. He returned repeatedly to the subject of a long alley of overscaled trees that creates a dark tunnel at the end of which a bright light illuminates a figure or, as here, a fountain. Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) was a French painter and draughtsman whose brief career spurred the revival of interest in colour and movement, as seen in the tradition of Correggio and Rubens. He revitalized the waning Baroque style, shifting it to the less severe, more naturalistic, less formally classical, Rococo.
