Shooting the Rapids, Saguenay River 1905-10 Winslow Homer American Homer often enjoyed fishing trips in the wilderness of Quebec with his brother Charles. He based this unfinished painting on watercolors created during their last visit to Canada in 1902. Family tradition suggests that it records a perilous canoe journey down the Saguenay River and that Charles is the frightened passenger holding on to the gunwales. Homer only sketchily blocked in details such as the paddles, the foam above a concealed rock in the riverbed, and the guides facial features, marking his intended revisions in chalk. The artists family believed that he considered the painting complete in its essentials, and donated it to the Museum after his death.. Shooting the Rapids, Saguenay River. Netting the Fish 1889 United States. An avid angler and sportsman, Homer often depicted fishing and hunting scenes in his artwork. Many of his watercolors that explore these subjects were painted on frequent trips to the Adirondack Mountains. Netting the Fish is unusual in its focus on a gentleman sportsman. Young, well groomed, and neatly attired, the fisherman in this watercolor stands in contrast to the rustic guides featured in many of the artistís other Adirondacks works. Homerís fluid brushstrokes describe the smooth surface of the water, and his background washes evoke the wooded shoreline seen at a distance. Netting the Fish is one of Homerís few grisaille, or monochrome, watercolors, painted as a study of values in preparation for the etching Fly Fishing, Saranac Lake.. Transparent watercolor, heightened with opaque white watercolor, with rewetting, blotting, and scraping, over graphite, on moderately thick, slightly textured, cream wove paper . Winslow Homer

Clouds and Water. Artist: Arthur Dove (American, Canandaigua, New York 1880-1946 Huntington, New York). Dimensions: 29 5/8 x 39 5/8 in. (75.2 x 100.6 cm). Date: 1930.Clouds and Water was inspired by the landscape of Halesite, a town on the north shore of Long Island where Dove and his companion Helen "Reds" Torr lived in the late 1920s. They resided on their boat, the Mona, in warm weather and they had just begun their first winter as caretakers of the Ketewomoke Yacht Club in November 1929. From their second-floor room at the Yacht Club, surrounded by windows on three sides, Dove and Torr had an unimpeded view of Huntington Harbor. In the airy marine prospect of Clouds and Water, several sailboats dip along the surface of the waves, and a landscape of rounded hills rises in the distance. The sky, which fills half the canvas, is banded with long curving lines that suggest wind currents. The painting's unrestrained painting style indicates Dove's philosophy about the elements of nature:
