A Ship Wrecked on a Shore on a Stormy Night, with Survivors Salvaging Their Goods 1695-1708 Ludolf Backhuysen Dutch This highly finished drawing depicts a dramatic scene. A merchant ship has run aground on the North-Sea shores in tempestuous weather. The top mast has given way to the forces of the wind and the remaining sails are fluttering wildly. Their movement is echoed by the mantle of the man, standing on an elevation to the left foreground. People are coming to the rescue of both the sailors and their wares. The ominous subject matter is reinforced by the dramatic lighting of the beach and high waves in the middle ground, which are contrasted by the stormy skies and the densely rendered foreground.This intricate composition dates from the last years of Ludolf Backhuysens career; a time at which his works are characterized by a predilection for romantic scenes, full of drama and suspense. Fire at Sea 1820-46 Clarkson Stanfield British Stanfield went to sea at eleven to escape apprenticeship to a drunken coach painter, was pressed into the Royal Navy in 1812, then took up scene painting at the Royalty Theatre, London after being discharged for injury in 1816. Known for stunning romantic effects, often created in partnership with David Roberts, the artist introduced moving dioramas into Christmas pantomimes and Easter spectacles, titled "Adventures of a Ship of War" (1825), "Napoleons Passage of the Simplon" (1830) and "Niagara" (1832). While touring painted panoramas around major British and European cities, Stanfield contributed to the exhibitions of the British Institution and Royal Academy, and was elected Associate at the latter in 1835 through the support of the "Sailor King" William IV. In 1844, he became first curator of the Naval Gallery at Greenwich. "Fire at Sea" combines visual drama with a knowledge of ships and the sea and once belonged to a family friend,
