STS078-726-014 (20 June - 7 July 1996) --- Washington D.C., located in the center of the photo, was photographed in both regular color (here) and infrared (STS078-760-010) by the Life and Microgravity Spacelab (LMS-1) crew members. The city of Washington is coextensive with the District of Columbia, whose site was agreed upon by Congress in 1790 as the permanent seat of government for the new nation. It is located at the head of the navigable portion of the Potomac River, which separates it from Virginia to the southwest. It covers an area of 68-square-mile (177-square-kilometers). Andrews Air Force Base is seen east southeast of Washington D.C. Baltimore, Maryland, surrounding the Patapsco River mouth into Chesapeake Bay is located northeast of Washington D. C. or in upper right.

SL3-83-166 (July-September 1973) --- A vertical view of the Washington D.C. and the Baltimore, Maryland area is seen in the Skylab 3 Earth Resources Experiments Package S190-B (five-inch Earth terrain camera) photograph taken from the Skylab space station in Earth orbit. The Chesapeake Bay is on the right (east) side of the picture. The Potomac River flows through the Washington area in the lower left (southwest) corner of the photograph. Several transportation routes and major highways stand out very distinctly. Especially conspicuous are the beltways around the cities, Interstate 95 between Baltimore and the nation s capitol and Interstate 70N leading west from Baltimore. The tunnel and harbor facilities in Baltimore show clearly, also. Identifiable features in the Washington area include the Capitol Building, the Mall area, Robert F. Kennedy Stadium (white circle), the five bridges across the Potomac, Andrews Air Force Base (on east loop), and the smaller Anacostia River. The extent

ISS043E120466 (04/13/2015) --- NASA astronaut Scott Kelly shared this image on Apr. 13, 2015 showing parts of Houston, Johnson Space Center and Ellington Airfield where NASA astronaut pilots get their flight time in T-38 jets. He tweeted it out to his follower's with the comment: "I can see my house (and @NASA_Johnson) from @Space_Station! #Houston #YearInSpace ".

The spacecraft was orbiting approximately 215 miles above a point centered at 32.3 degrees north latitude and 11.8 degrees east longitude.

STS059-50-003 (9-20 April 1994) --- This 35mm night image of the New York City metropolitan area was captured by the crew of the STS-59 crew during the Space Radar Laboratory (SRL) mission. Scientists studying film from the Space Shuttle Endeavour feel this is the best nocturnal view of this region from the manned space program.

ISS033-E-014186 (16 Oct. 2012) --- A nighttime view of Baltimore, Maryland is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 33 crew member in the International Space Station. Baltimore is located on the U.S. mid-Atlantic coastline along the terminus of the Patapsco River into Chesapeake Bay, and is the largest seaport along this part of the coast. Like many large U.S. metropolitan areas, the most brightly lit area corresponds to the highest density of buildings and typically indicates the urban core -- in this case, downtown Baltimore at center. Highways and large arterial streets appear as bright yellow-orange lines extending outwards from the downtown area into the surrounding suburban regions (light violet and reddish brown regions of diffuse lighting). Dark areas beyond the suburban zone are rural - or to the southeast, indicate the waters of Chesapeake Bay. Orbital View of Seville, Space

STS035-73-082 (2-10 Dec 1990) --- This agricultural and ranching area, Rio Sao Francisco, Brazil (13.0S, 43.5W) has been under study for several years. See scene STS-31-92-045 for comparison. This area has many small single family subsistence farms, large square and rectangular commercial farms and pastures for livestock grazing. Over the several years of observation, the number and size of farms has increased and center-pivot, swing-arm irrigation systems have been installed.

ISS034-E-039331 (2 Feb. 2013) --- This nocturnal photo of London, England was downlinked by the Expedition 34 crew from the International Space Station, flying approximately 240 miles above Earth, on Feb. 2, 2013. Expedition 34 Flight Engineer Chris Hadfield, astronaut with the Canadian Space Agency, added this footnote to his downlink London, on the Thames, from the city to the encircling motorway. Heathrow very visible on the (west). North is at the bottom making west on the right in this image. It s the bright feature with dark parallel lines near the outer looping road.

The orbital outpost was over a point centered at 40.4 degrees north latitude and 124.2 degrees east longitude when the photo was taken.

ISS040-E-108372 (25 Aug. 2014) --- One of the Expedition 40 crew members aboard the Earth-orbiting International Space Station photographed this image of a large part of New York City on Aug. 25, 2014. Manhattan Island and its Central Park are tell-tale points for recognition purposes for the six-person crew of the orbital outpost, flying approximately 225 nautical miles above the city. The 800mm focal length used by the crew member provides great detail in the scene.

The Nard Ring is a striking visual feature from space, and astronauts have photographed it several times. The Ring is a race car test track in Italy. This image was acquired by NASA's Terra satellite on August 17. 2007.

ISS038-E-029014 (9 Jan. 2014) --- Manhattan, with its long and narrow Central Park easily seen near the center of the photo, stands out in this view from the International Space Station, photographed by one of the Expedition 38 crew members. Most of the metropolis of New York and parts of New Jersey are visible. MetLife Stadium, site of the 2014 Super Bowl, can be seen in East Rutherford, NJ in the upper right corner of the photo as the circular feature near the oval Meadowlands Race Track.

For orientation purposes, note that Manhattan runs horizontal through the frame from left to the midpoint. Central Park is just a little to the left of frame center.
