ISS035-E-18006 (8 April 2013) --- One of the Expedition 35 crew members aboard the Earth-orbiting International Space Station photographed this image of Tata Sabaya Volcano, located in the Altiplano region of Bolivia. The volcano rises to a summit elevation of 5430 meters above sea level. While its current form is that of a youthful” stratovolcano, the regional geological evidence indicates an older, eventful history, according to scientists. The scientists say that prior to approximately 12,000 years ago (during the late Pleistocene Epoch), a large debris avalanche was formed by collapse of the ancestral Tata Sabaya volcano. Debris from the avalanche swept into the nearby Salar de Coipasa -at that time filled with a lake larger than today - significantly changing its northwestern coastline. Astronaut Daniel W. Bursch, Expedition Four flight engineer, was delighted in capturing this image of Mt. Everest in the Himalayan Range from aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The mountain is near frame center. Because the photo was taken close to orbital sunrise, the low sun angle gave tremendous relief to the mountains. Named for Sir George Everest, the British surveyor-general of India, Mount Everest is the tallest point on earth. Standing 29,028 feet tall, it is 5 1/2 miles above sea level. Mount Everest is located half in Nepal and half in Tibet.

ISS011-E-09620 (26 June 2005) --- Grasberg Mine, Indonesia is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 11 crewmember on the International Space Station. Located in the Sudirman Mountains of the Irian Jaya province of Indonesia, the Grasberg complex (also known as the Freeport Mine) is one of the largest gold and copper mining operations in the world. The Sudirman Mountains form the western portion of the Maoke Range that extend across Irian Jaya from west to the east-southeast. According to scientists, these ranges were formed by ongoing collision of the northward-moving Australian and westward-moving Pacific tectonic plates. Intrusion of hot magma into sedimentary rock layers during uplift of the mountains resulted in the formation of copper- and gold-bearing ore bodies. Rich copper ore bodies were discovered in the area in 1936, and the Grasberg gold-bearing ore bodies were discovered in 1988. Mount St. Helens, Washington, erupted 40 years ago, on May 18, 1980. A massive debris avalanche, triggered by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1, caused a lateral eruption that reduced the elevation of the mountain's summit from 2,950 m to 2,549 m, leaving a 1.6 km wide horseshoe-shaped crater. The collapse of the northern flank resulted in massive volcanic mudflows. Since 1980, new lava built a dome in the crater, and occasional steam and ash plumes have been emitted. The Landsat MSS image was acquired July 31, 1980, and the ASTER image (Figure 1) on July 28, 2019. The images cover an area of 30 by 30 km, and are located at 46.2 degrees north, 122.2 degrees west.

The Andes Mountains are part of the Southern Cordillera formed from subduction zone volcanism at the convergent boundary of the Nazca plate and the South American plate. Aracar volcano (summit elev. 6,082 m) is one of many volcanoes in the Andes Range. It is a steep-sided stratovolcano with a youthful-looking summit crater 1-1.5 km in diameter. It is located just east of the Argentina-Chile border. Well-preserved lava flows are found at its base. Prior to a report of ash columns from the summit in 1993, the volcano was not known to be active and very little is known of the volcanos age and history. The large whitish features are very common in the arid Andes; they are called salars. The term salar is used exclusively of the saltwater wetlands of the Puna (high Andes) and can describe not only salt lakes but also temporary marshes, shallow lakes and lagoons, or simply salt crust.

STS077-740-029 (19-29 May 1996) --- In recent years, the most active peak in the High Altiplano of the central Andes Mountains has been Lascar, in northern Chile - featured in this 70mm frame. North is to the left in this picture. Lascars largest recent eruption was in April, 1993. The STS-55 crew photographed large dust plumes carrying the newly-deposited ash about one week after the eruption. Since then, astronauts have been closely monitoring Lascar, which remains active. This crew noticed and photographed Lascars plume, which is shown here as a steam plume rising from Lascars central summit crater. This level of activity is typical. This view also shows the extent of weathering as determined by the surface color of the 1993 flow from the crater. The flow traveled down the valley which is to the left (north) and then down (west) from the summit of this image. In earlier views the flow was a light gray, almost white feature in the valley. The 416 Fire started June 1, 2018, about 13 miles (18 kilometers) north of Durango, Colorado. Four weeks later, the fire was mostly contained, after consuming 35,000 acres of timber and brush. The cause of the fire is presently unknown. This image, acquired June 26, 2018 by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection (ASTER) radiometer instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite, shows vegetation in red, clouds in white, cities and bare rocky areas in gray, and the burned area in dark gray. A few small hot spots, detected on ASTER's thermal channels, are overlain in yellow. Smoke can be seen drifting eastward from these hotspots. The data cover an area of 15.2 by 12.9 miles (25.3 by 21.5 kilometers) located at 7.5 degrees north, 107.9 degrees east.

Landsat satellites collect data along a wide ground track that spans 185 kilometers (115 miles) but with a spatial resolution that allows them to see the human signature on the landscape. Each Landsat pixel covers a 30 by 30 meter area (98 by 98 feet), about the size of a baseball diamond. This visualization shows the Landsat path over Minneapolis, the site of the 2014 Major League Baseball All-Star game, and then zooms in to reveal the individual pixels. ISS028-E-014782 (6 July 2011) --- The Shoemaker (formerly Teague) Impact Structure, located in Western Australia in a drainage basin south of the Waldburg Range, presents an other-worldly appearance in this detailed photograph recorded from onboard the International Space Station on July 6. The Shoemaker impact site is approximately 30 kilometers in diameter, and is clearly defined by concentric ring structures formed in sedimentary rocks (brown to dark brown, image center) that were deformed by the impact event approximately 1630 million years ago, according to the Earth Impact Database. Several saline and ephemeral lakesNabberu, Teague, Shoemaker, and numerous smaller pondsoccupy the land surface between the concentric ring structures. Earth Observation. iss069e033759 (July 17, 2023) -- As the International Space Station orbited 260 miles above Turkey, NASA astronaut Woody Hoburg captured this image of Lake Tuza disappearing lake that was once the second-largest in the country. During some summers, the salt lake completely dries up, leaving the off-white appearance of higher concentrations of salt and minerals. What's left of the lake experiences seasonal color changes due to algae blooms, like the deep red shown near the bottom center of the image.

NASA satellite image acquired May 2, 2010Ash and steam continued billowing from Eyjafjallajökull Volcano in early May 2010. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASAs Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured this natural-color image on May 2, 2010.The volcanos summit is near the left edge of this image, capped by a dark plume. The plume is dull gray-brown, indicating that its principal visible component is volcanic ash. Ash from the plume blows toward the east-southeast, passing over a charcoal-colored ash field on the land surface. Just to the north of Eyjafjallajökulls summit are white puffs of steam, likely from surface lava flows vaporizing snow and glacial ice.On May 4, 2010, the Icelandic Meteorological Office warned that Eyjafjallajökull showed no signs of ending its eruptive activity in the near future. The Met Office reported that ash from the volcano had reached a height of 5.8 to 6.0 kilometers (19,000 to 20,000 feet) above sea level, and had spread 65 to 80 kilomet

SL2-03-126 (June 1973) --- A color infrared photograph of the Los Angeles County and Kern County area, taken from the Skylab space station in Earth orbit during its first manned Skylab mission. The Mojave Desert occupies the northeast one-fourth of the photograph. Lake Isabella in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is the v-shaped body of water. The San Gabriel Mountains extend across the southern part of the picture. At lower center is the intersection of the San Andreas and Garlock faults. The San Joaquin Valley is in the center at the left edge. (The picture should be held with the heavy cloud cover at lower right corner so that north will be at top.) This picture was exposed by one of the six lenses of the Itek-furnished S190-A Multispectral Photographic Facility experiment in the Multiple Docking Adapter of the Skylab space station. ISS011-E--8490 (10 June 2005) --- This digital still photograph, taken on June 10 from the Earth-orbiting International Space Station, shows an active Colima, the most prominent volcanic center of the western Mexican Belt. Around 11 p.m. local time, June 6, an explosion from this volcano, for which the summit elevation is approximately 3,850 meters, produced an ash plume to a height of approximately 8.5 kilometers (27,900 feet). The ash plume traveled southwest at a speed of approximately 79 kilometers per hour, and ash fell in and around the cities of Colima, about 30 kilometers away, and Villa de Alvarez. Brief evacuation of some 50 residents in the area was considered a minor undertaking and it was reported some three days after this picture was taken that all were able to return to their homes.

White ribbon-like salt lakes near the river mouth and the wide expanse of sand dunes in the Great Desert, at right, are evidence of the arid climate. The Bingham Canyon Mine (center) located approximately 32 kilometers to the southeast of Salt Lake City, UT is one of the largest open-pit mines in the world, measuring over 4 kilometers wide and 1,200 meters deep. The mine exploits a porphyry copper, a type of geological structure formed by crystal-rich magma moving upwards through pre-existing rock layers. As the magma cools and crystallizes (forming an igneous rock with large crystals in a fine-grained matrix, known as a porphyry), hot fluids circulate through the magma and surrounding rocks via fractures. This process of hydrothermal alteration typically forms copper-bearing and other minerals in spatial patterns that a geologist recognizes as a potential porphyry copper deposit. After a new small eruption sent an ash cloud 1.24 miles (2 kilometers) into the sky on Dec. 7, 2017, Indonesia's Mount Agung volcano quieted down. This image was acquired Dec. 8 after the latest activity by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument on NASA's Terra satellite. The image shows vegetation in red colors. The summit crater has a hot spot (yellow) as detected by ASTER's thermal infrared channels. More than 65,00 residents continue to be evacuated from the volcano's danger zone in case of a major eruption. The image covers an area of 11 by 12.3 miles (17.8 by 19.8 kilometers), and is located at 8.3 degrees south, 115.5 degrees east.

ISS037-E-005104 (2 Oct. 2013) --- Upsala Glacier Retreat and Patagonia Icefield are featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 37 crew member on the International Space Station. This photograph highlights the snout of the Upsala Glacier (49.88S 73.3W) on the Argentine side of the North Patagonian Icefield. Ice flow in this glacier (white mass, left) is from the north (left). Dark lines of rocky moraine within the ice give a sense of the slow ice flow from left to right. A smaller side glacier joins Upsala at the present-day ice frontthe wall from which masses of ice periodically collapse into Lake Argentino. In this image the 2.75-kilometer-long wall casts a thin, dark shadow. The surface of Lake Argentino is whitened by a mass of ice debris from a recent collapse of the ice wall. STS003-10-613 (22-30 March 1982) --- A truly remarkable view of White Sands and the nearby Carrizozo Lava Beds in southeast NM (33.5N, 106.5W). White Sands, site of the WW II atomic bomb development and testing facility and later post war nuclear weapons testing that can still be seen in the cleared circular patterns on the ground. Space shuttle Columbia (STS-3), this mission, landed at the White Sands alternate landing site because of bad weather at Edwards AFB, CA.
