ISS017-E-006820 (13 May 2008) --- Isla de la Palma in the Canary Islands is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 17 crewmember on the International Space Station. The Canary Islands, a group of volcanic islands, lie just off the west coast of Morocco in the Atlantic Ocean; at the northwest end of the chain of islands is Isla de la Palma. According to scientists, the island started forming as a submarine volcano approximately 3-4 million years ago. Subaerial (above the water surface) volcanic activity and island formation began around 2 million years ago. Most geologists believe the Canary Islands formed over the remnants of an old "hotspot" in the mantle, or mantle plume. The residual hotspot melting produced the magma that resulted in the Canary Island volcanoes. While there is little evidence to support the current existence of a mantle plume, volcanic activity is still taking place -- the most recent lava flows on Isla de Palma were erupted in 1971. AS09-26A-3728A (8 March 1969) --- Color infrared photograph of the Houston-Galveston-Freeport, Texas Gulf Coast area taken on March 8, 1969, by one of the four synchronized cameras of the Apollo 9 Earth Resources Survey S065 Experiment. At 3:05 p.m. (EST) when this picture was made the Apollo 9 spacecraft was at an altitude of 105 nautical miles, and the sun elevation was 54 degrees above the horizon. The location of the point on Earth's surface at which the four-camera combination was aimed was 29 degrees 4 minutes north latitude, and 95 degrees 24 minutes west longitude. The three other cameras used: (B) black and white film with a red filter; (C) black and white infrared film; and (D) black and white film with a green filter.

The southern half of the island of Okinawa, Japan (26.5N, 128.0E) can be seen in this nearly cloud free view. Okinawa is part of the Ryuku Islands which extend from Taiwan northeastward to Kyushu, southernmost of the Japanese Home Islands. The large military base at Kadena, with large runways, is visible near the center of the scene. Kadena is one of several emergency landing sites around the world for the space shuttle.

2013 image of Adler and the newly created Olympic Coastal Cluster.A quick comparison reveals a largely agricultural area was transformed into the Coastal Olympic Cluster with the nearby Olympic Village and Rail Station with transport to the Mountain Cluster. A spanking new breakwater structure was installed to create a harbor for cruise ships. Mayotte, Africa, True Colour Satellite Image. Satellite view of Mayotte, an overseas collectivity of France, in the northern Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean. This image was compiled from data acquired by LANDSAT 5 & 7 satellites.

SL4-139-3942 (7 Jan. 1974) --- This oblique view of the Island of Kyushu, Japan, was taken from the Earth-orbiting Skylab space station on Jan. 8, 1974 during its third manning. A plume from the volcano Sakurajima (bottom center) is clearly seen as it extends about 80 kilometers (50 miles) east from the volcano. (EDITOR'S NOTE: On Jan. 10, 2013, a little over 39 years after this 1974 photo was made from the Skylab space station, Expedition 34 crew members aboard the International Space Station took a similar picture (frame no. ISS034-E-027139) featuring smoke rising from the same volcano, with much of the island of Kyushu visible. Interesting comparisons can be made between the two photos, at least as far as the devices used to record them. The Skylab image was made by one of the three Skylab 4 crew members with a hand-held camera using a 100-mm lens and 70-mm color film, whereas the station photo was taken with 180-mm lens on a digital still camera, hand-held by one of the six crew me
