KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- This panoramic view of Space Launch Complex 36 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station shows the two mobile service towers on the ground after their demolition. The old towers are being toppled as part of the ongoing project to demolish the historic site to prevent corrosion from becoming a safety concern. A majority of the steel will be recycled and the rest will be taken to the landfill at CCAFS. Complex 36 was the birthplace of NASA's planetary launch program. It was built for the Atlas/Centaur development program and was operated under NASA's sponsorship until the late 1980s. Complex 36 hosted many historic missions over the years including Surveyor that landed on the moon and Mariner that orbited Mars and included one to Mercury. Two of the most historic launches were the Pioneer 10 and 11 space probes that were launched to Jupiter and are now outside of the solar system in interstellar space. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- A beach on NASA's Kennedy Space Center is the site designated for cleanup of debris. More than 130 volunteers from the joint NASAs Kennedy Space Center and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service contract organizations give up their afternoon to gather all the “unnatural” items that had accumulated on 6.1 miles of central Florida east coast shoreline during the past 12 months. Part of the center's dedication to a clean environment, volunteers gathered enough trash to fill approximately 450 garbage bags and enough recyclable plastic and glass to fill 150 bags.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, University of Florida geologists and NASA biologists use an all-terrain vehicle to survey sand dunes that have been restored along a 1.2 mile stretch of shoreline near Launch Pads 39A and B. As part of a six-month effort to help prevent further erosion, 180,000 shrubs, including grasses, sunflowers, vines, sea grapes and palmettos were planted.Constant pounding from tropical storms, such as Hurricane Sandy in October of 2012, other weather systems and higher than usual tides, destroyed sand dunes protecting infrastructure at the spaceport.

GREAT LAKES, Il. (June 16, 2022) The common tern is a state-endangered migratory bird species that nests in colonies on sand or gravel beaches and islands.The colony found at Naval Station Great Lakes is the only remaining nesting colony in the state of Illinois, since their arrival in 2000. NSGL Environmental Department and Illinois Department of Natural Resources have constructed three floating nesting platforms that are deployed in the harbor to create additional nesting habitat for the species. Opened in 1911, NSGL is the Navys largest training installation and the home of the Navys only Boot Camp. Located on over 1600 acres overlooking Lake Michigan, the installation includes 1,153 buildings with 39 on the National Register of Historic Places. NSGL supports over 50 tenant commands and elements as well as over 20,000 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and DoD civilians who live and work on the installation.
