This site, including 3 sets of walls which encircle the castle and the surrounding town, was inhabited as early as the 7th century B.C. This site was first recorded as being used as a fortress in 1068, and through successive rebuildings has retained the form of the castle. Antiquities: Roman sculpture and inscriptions; excavation in progress of ancient site adjacent to the castle. Object Notes: One print has extra negative. The Woodcutter's Breakfast (The Faggot Gatherer's Meal) ca. 1832-34 () William Henry Hunt British Hunt's meticulous genre and still life subjects prefigure the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's emphasis on meticulous detail. This work displays the artist's mature mastery of watercolor, admiringly described by his pupil John Ruskin in "The Elements of Drawing" (1857). To create this image, Hunt stippled a white gouache ground using broken touches of watercolor and extensive passages of scraping to create bold effects of light and texture. His intense, realistic vision of British rural life focuses on an unadorned cottage interior where a humble figure rests on a bench. The distinct textures of the brick fireplace, rough flagstones, simple furniture, earthenware pot, iron kettle, and piled branches are all lovingly recorded.. Street at Saverne 1858 James McNeill Whistler American After visiting the Alsatian town of Saverne in the summer of 1858, Whistler produced his first etched Nocturne. Sharp recession heightens the irregular forms of old buildings, with a gas lantern hanging at right casting deep shadows. The choice of blue paper and "artistic" inking, carried out by the leading Parisian printer Auguste Deltre, enhance the effect.
