On the Thames at Hammersmith ca. 1836 John Varley British Varley's delightfully fresh watercolor describes a Thameside scene on a sunny summer day. It centers on a large tree with spreading limbs and abundant foliage, a semi-rural riverbank beyond lined with unadorned buildings and a chimneyed brickworks. Rapidly applied washes describe a slatted fence silhouetted against sunlit grass and workers pursuing everyday tasks. Deft strokes evoke rushes, flowers and a drinking cow. For most of his career, the artist devoted himself to idealized compositions demonstrating principles that he promoted as a successful drawing master. At this moment, public interest in Varley's formal exhibition pieces had waned, and he felt free to create a group of brilliant studies in Hammersmith and Chiswick, their washy effects showing appreciation for technical innovations introduced by Peter De Wint, one of his most talented students.. Samuel Fleet Homestead Frances Flora Palmer (American, 1812-1876). Samuel Fleet Homestead, ca. 1850s. Transparent and opaque watercolor over graphite on cream, moderately thick, slightly textured wove paper mounted to Japanese paper., 18 3/8 x 27 1/4 in. (46.7 x 69.2 cm). Frances Fanny” Palmer was a professional artist who worked for the famous printmaking firm of Currier & Ives for twenty years. Although watercolor was considered a polite accomplishment for genteel women—what an 1856 writer referred to as a husband-catcher”—it was rare for a woman to have an artistic career in the mid-nineteenth century. This picture of a handsome Neoclassical mansion on Fulton Street in Brooklyn demonstrates Palmer’s deft control of the watercolor medium and her eye for anecdotal detail. American Art ca. 1850s

Ferry near Gorinchem 1646 Salomon van Ruysdael Dutch Ruysdael has a reputation for inventing topography, but this canvas depicts a largely faithful view of Gorinchem (Gorcum) from the south. The artist's viewpoint was on a spit of land called Buiten de Waterpoort, along the river de Merwede. The 197-foot tower of the Great Church is seen through the trees, while a windmill, ramparts, and identifiable buildings recede in the right background. Travellers at an inn and in a fishing-cum-ferry boat enliven the scene. Ruysdael lived well to the north in Haarlem, but he was part-owner of a mill in Gorinchem and in 1643 and 1644 painted landscapes incorporating parts of the local castle of Loevestein.. Boatman among the Reeds. Artist: Camille Corot (French, Paris 1796-1875 Paris). Dimensions: 23 1/2 x 32 in. (59.7 x 81.3 cm). Date: ca. 1865.Since Corot often repeated compositions and motifs, his works are difficult to date. The present picture betrays similarities to Corot's River with a Distant Tower, also in the Museum's collection, which, on the basis of style, seems to date to the early 1860s. The feathery brushstrokes and lighter palette of this work suggest it was painted later in the decade. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Camille Corot.

It was a perfect location: iron ore was mined there, and there was ample waterpower, inexpensive labour and fuel (wood).
