Landscape with an Old Woman Holding a Spindle, after Domenico Campagnola ca. 1715 Antoine Watteau French A wealthy banker, Pierre Crozat (1661-1740) was one of the foremost collectors of drawings in the eighteenth century. He befriended Watteau, offering him commissions, housing, and access to his collection. Watteau was entranced with the sixteenth-century Venetian landscape drawings he found there and copied many of them. In this case, the original drawing by Domenico Campagnola (1500-1564) is also in the collection of the Museum (1972.118.243). Although he is faithful to Campagnola's composition, Watteau substituted his preferred medium, red chalk, for the Venetian's pen and brown ink.. The Four Seasons 1610 Hessel Gerritsz Hessel Gerritsz was active primarily as a mapmaker but early in his career he produced and published a few prints after the main landscapist of his day in Amsterdam, David Vinckboons. This series of four prints combines a traditional theme, the seasons depicted with their associated activities - working the garden in spring, boating in summer, harvesting in autumn, and ice skating in winter - with depictions of monuments in the Dutch countryside. Here, each image is set against a depiction of a castle in the outskirts of the city of Utrecht. Both elegant figures and peasants populate the scenes. A town by the river, Marco Ricci, printmaker, 1723-1730, etching, Born to a family of Venetian artists, Marco Ricci first studied with his famous uncle Sebastiano Ricci. After murdering a gondolier in a brawl, Marco fled to Dalmatia, where he spent four years apprenticed to a landscape painter. By 1705 he was in Milan working with Alessandro Magnasco, absorbing his free handling of paint. After trips to Florence and Rome, he went to the Netherlands and studied Dutch landscape painting on his way to England. During nearly two years in London, he created opera sets and decorated private homes. Back in Venice in 1716, Marco continued his stage work and painted landscape backgrounds for Sebastiano's works. Around 1720 he made small landscapes in tempera on leather. Whether small or large, capriccio or ancient ruins, Marco united the simplicity and realism of Dutch and Flemish art with the fantasies of the Baroque stage, a key development in Venetian landscape art.
