To modern eyes, a bare-chested portrait of a man in his mid-60s might seem undignified. However, it was fashionable for gentlemen of Englefields generation to be portrayed in this manner, deliberately referencing the antique sculptures of Roman statesmen they admired. As a Catholic, Englefield was barred from taking part in politics in England; however, he was a member of several clubs devoted to the amateur study of art, science, and history. Among these were the Society of Dilettanti, which championed the works of antiquity and promoted the creation of modern art in the same spirit—like this marble bust by celebrated sculptor Francis Legatt Chantrey.

In this sculptural likeness, Clements turned head and the dramatic folds of his robes suggest a man engaged in dynamic conversation. His embroidered stole shows the papal insignia—the crossed keys and the tiara—and the six stars from the popes family coat of arms. Bernini, the popes frequent go-to artist, and his contemporaries in Rome breathed new energy into an old art form, the portrait bust, by focusing on the living presence and personality of their sitters.

Louise Brongniart 1779, after a portrait of 1777 Jean Antoine Houdon French Among the numerous busts Houdon showed at the Salon of 1777 were a pair of Louise Brongniart and her brother Alexandre, both children of the distinguished Neoclassical architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart (1739-1813). The originals, now believed to be the terracottas in the Louvre, were among the sculptor's most popular creations and that of the five-year-old Louise, in particular, was reproduced well into the twentieth century. The Museum's marble, with a kerchief headdress elaborating the knotted scarf that binds Louise's hairdo in the original, is now thought to be one of numerous later variants.
