In subject matter--actors, lovers, street vendors--the figures were undoubtedly inspired by the precedent set at Meissen by the models of J. J. Kändler. Apart from its general influence as the first European factory to develop a successful repertoire of porcelain sculpture, Meissen was directly influential in the conception of the Capodimonte factory in 1743: Charels IV, king of Naples, was married to Augustus the Strong's granddaughter, who is said to have brought with her to Italy no fewer than seventeen Meissen table services. His curling fingers form a socket that would have held the shank of an oil lamp. The figure wears a long tunic gathered at the waist by a plain belt secured by a belt hook. The skirt, sleeves, shoulders, and lapels of the costume have been inlaid with gold line decoration and cast with border motifs. The hair is carefully dressed and partially covered by a close-fitting headdress with a double-lobed crest in the center.

The Spaghetti Eaters (Columbine and Pulcinella) ca. 1750 Capodimonte Porcelain Manufactory Giuseppe Gricci (Italian, ca. 1700-1770) was one of the most accomplished and prolific porcelain modelers of the eighteenth century and often compared to his contemporaries Johann Joachim Kandler (German, 1706-1775) at the Meissen porcelain factory in Germany (1982.60.300) and Franz Anton Bustelli (Swiss, d. 1763) at the Nymphenburg porcelain manufactory in Munich (1977.216.56) in terms of stature in the field of porcelain sculpture. Griccis work is remarkable for being executed in soft-paste porcelain, which did not permit the degree of detail or crispness that Kandler or Bustelli could achieve in working with the hard-paste porcelain. Very little is known about Griccis career before he joined the Capodimonte factory; nonetheless, his name appears in the factorys first personnel list dated November 1743.[1 Gricci arrived in Naples from Florence, where he presumably received his training, and

Mounted Hussar 1866-75 Ernest Meissonier French Meissonier's Friedland, 1807 (acc. no. 87.20.11), a broad canvas celebrating a Napoleonic victory as envisioned by a firm adherent of the Second Empire, is arguably the most important academic painting of the second half of the nineteenth century in the Museum's collection. Begun in the mid-1850s, it was completed only in 1875. One reason for the long delay was Meissonier's extraordinary preparatory research. The work was preceded by many drawings, oil sketches, and, for the primary horsemen, several wax models, of which this may be the only one to survive. The medium is perishable by nature. A wire armature was affixed to a small piece of wood, and warm pellets of wax were pressed onto it to form the figures. In a photo of Meissonier's atelier, this very model is clamped to his modeling stand. He could thus view it from any angle and sketch from it. The Music Lesson ca. 1765 Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory This large and ambitious figure group is one of the most important pieces of porcelain sculpture made at the Chelsea factory, England's premier ceramic manufactory in the mid-eighteenth century. The composition of a shepherd boy teaching a shepherdess to play the flute was derived from an engraving after a work by the French artist Francois Boucher (1703-1770). These works by the French sculptor Claude Michel, called Clodion, show a pair of young satyrs. Clodion was fond of depicting characters from classical antiquity in his work, and the subject of child or baby satyrs in Bacchanalian celebrations appears often in the work of Rococo artists. The female satyr wraps a plump arm around a nest filled with baby birds, while her male counterpart holds an owl. Balancing on one foot, the two flee the scene of their theft.

Like most of the figures, this elegant woman from Kazan is modeled from engravings published by Johann Gottlieb Georghi in his Description if All the Peoples Inhabiting the Russian State (editions of 1774, 1776, and later). The authorship of the models themselves is not established, but some may be attributable to Jean-Dominique Rachette (1744-1809), chief modeler at the factory from 1779 to 1804.. Statuette lekythos in the form of an eros. The love god Eros appears in the midst of the greener and blooming nature. His body effects effectively in front of the film of the spread wings and the ranking work. Eros seems to have settled out - especially from the air - in a sanctuary indicated by the pillar on his left-mentioned sanctuary. In his left hand he holds a shell that served as a container for ointments or make-up. The box hanging on a band in the right hand received women at their wedding day to keep their jewelry. For the daily use, the lecyths used as ointment oil vessels were either as a consecration or grave management. The back is formed by a rotated on the disc and then halved acorn-lecythos with its own foot.

Date: 1520-30.These sculptural reliefs (2015.388.1-.4) display extraordinary, jewel-like enameling accomplished through an innovative technique involving molten glass paste built up over an armature of gold wires on a silver base. In expressive detail, they represent four scenes of Christ's Passion at a tiny scale--fully appreciable only to those privileged enough to view the reliefs at close range. (The compositions owe more than a little to the Small Passion print series by the famous Northern Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer.) Expensive as they were, the plaques would have been worth only a fraction of the treasure in the container they decorated: most likely some lost relic, imbued with spiritual power and believed to bridge our world with the divine.Elizabeth Cleland, 2017. Angel second half 18th century Attributed to Salvatore di Franco In 1964, Loretta Hines Howard generously presented to the Museum over 140 Neapolitan crèche figures, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century. The varied assortment includes figures from the three traditional scenes of a complete Neapolitan presepio: the Nativity, with angels, shepherds, and sheep; the procession of the three Magi, with their colorful retinue of attendants; and the varied and gay crowd of country and town people thronging the tavern, or inn, of Bethlehem the diversorium mentioned by St. Luke, where on the Holy Night there was no place for Mary and Joseph. Averaging between twelve and fifteen inches in height, according to the position they were to take in perspective in the stage set, the figures are pliable and can be given poses at will, according to their facial expressions.
