Two Mothers.This sweet scene reflects increasing interest in the lives of fishermen. The statue shows a young woman holding her child, with her dogs puppies gathered in her apron. Yet life is not a bed of roses for this barefoot fishermans wife. She has only two fish in her pouch, and the net that she drags behind her is empty.

Frà Carlo di Camillo Chigi contracted Francesco, Giovan Antonio and Agostino Mazzuoli to execute a marble ciborium with two angels for the high altar of S. Agostino. Soft-paste porcelain, painted in enamels; height: 38.5 cm (15 3/16 in.). The distinctively Roman Catholic subject of Mary cradling her son, the crucified Christ, suggests this figure was probably made for one of the aristocratic English families forced to practice their Catholicism in secret during the mid-1700s. Because of the laws banning Catholic worship in England, grand houses were often modified to include private chapels or rooms in private quarters where visiting priests delivered the sacraments in defiance of the laws favoring Protestant worship. A figure of this size and type likely would have served as an important devotional focal point within that context.

Saint Stephen. Artist: Hans Leinberger (German, active 1510-1530). Culture: South German. Dimensions: Overall: 33 x 21 1/2 x 8 1/2in. (83.8 x 54.6 x 21.6cm). Date: ca. 1525-30.Saint Stephen sits upon a low, partially draped, backless bench. He wears a dalmatic over a long tunic, indicating his position in the church as a deacon, and in his right hand he holds an open book supporting three rocks, referring to his death by stoning. Revered as the first Christian martyr, Stephen's story is recounted in the Acts of the Apostles (6-7). The work is carved from three pieces of wood: one was used for the saint and the other two for the lateral extensions of the seat. The modeling is so convincing that when viewed from the front, the figure, in fact a sculpture in relief, appears to be rendered fully in the round. The statue is well preserved except for the loss of much of the original polychromy. The relief probably was once part of a series of seated figures of saints that may have included

Marble and limestone statue of an attendant late 4th or 3rd century B.C. Greek, South Italian, Tarentine This young woman held an object in her right hand, perhaps a fan. The statue was originally likely part of a funerary group of an aristocratic woman with her attendant that would have served as a tomb marker. It was not uncommon during the Hellenistic period in Southern Italy to carve the heads of significant commissions in imported marble and use local limestone for the bodies. The Greek city of Tarentum had a particularly distinctive sculptural tradition of limestone funerary monuments, other fragmentary examples of which can be seen in the nearby case for luxury arts of Southern Italy.. Standing Virgin and Child. Artist: Attributed to Niclaus Gerhaert von Leyden (North Netherlandish, active Strasbourg, ca. 1462-died 1473 Vienna). Culture: Austrian. Dimensions: 13 1/4 x 5 1/8 x 3 9/16 in. (33.6 x 13 x 9.1 cm). Date: ca. 1470.Niclaus Gerhaert, a seminal artist of the generation preceding Albrecht Dürer's, was presumably born in Leiden and was active in Strasbourg and Vienna, as well as in several cities between them. Three of his signed works are known and only four others, including this sculpture, have been seriously ascribed to him. The statuette expresses a combined sense of drama, monumentality, and elegance through the extraordinarily accomplished carving of the fine-grained wood. The rhythm and balance of the complex drapery folds are set off by fine linear detail and textural contrasts.
