God of the Trinity ca. 1300 German Christians of the Middle Ages believed that God is three persons: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This enthroned God the Father comes from a larger composition known as a Shrine Madonna, like the complete example exhibited nearby (acc. no. 17.190.185). Devotional sculptures were often made of multiple elements; in this composition the corpus of Christ from the cross and the Dove of the Holy Spirit are missing. Closely related sculptures produced in the Upper Rhine and the area of Lake Constance were created specifically for female convents, suggesting that this figure also comes from such a context.. The sensitively carved face of the Virgin generates a tender aura, presenting her as a loving mother rather than the Queen of Heaven. The head of the child Jesus is a modern replacement. Enthroned Virgin and Child ca. 1200-1250 Spanish Although many ivory statues from medieval France survive, this enthroned Virgin and Child is a rare example from Spain. The wide open eyes, straight nose, rounded chin, and thick neck are typical of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century representations from the old kingdoms of Léon and Navarre. Both Virgin and Child are shown holding spherical objects (apples or orbs), symbols of authority that allude to Jesus as the new Adam and Mary as the new Eve. Mourning Saint John and Mourning Virgin (pair), c. 1250-1275. Spain, Kingdom of Castile and Leon, 13th century. Polychromed oak; overall: 154.9 x 36.9 x 20.4 cm (61 x 14 1/2 x 8 1/16 in.). These figures of the Virgin and Saint John once formed part of a Crucifixion group that would have originally included a figure of Christ on the cross shown at center. Fortunately the original polychromy of the two figures has been preserved, affording the viewer a rare opportunity to appreciate a rich medieval decorative color pattern suggestive of some early textiles. Though they date to the 13th century, the two figures reflect a late 12th-century style.

Artists working in clay would normally divide a large sculpture horizontally with a wire before firing to ensure that it dried evenly. The sections would then be reassembled with mortar disguised under the paint. This is the only terracotta sculpture attributed to medieval Prague.
