Boats off the Coast, Storm Approaching 1830 John Sell Cotman As he approached fifty, Cotman abandoned oil painting after a number of his works failed to sell and instead refocused his ambitions on watercolor. This luminous seascape demonstrates his mature mastery of the medium. The fishing boat threatened by a storm may allude to the artists personal struggles, but more obviously it pays tribute to J. M. W. Turners famous painting Dutch Boats in a Gale (1801; National Gallery, London), as both works are centered on a sharply canted, golden-sailed fishing boat, distant warship, and looming clouds. More generally, Cotman is declaring his admiration for seventeenth-century Dutch seascapes while also demonstrating how watercolors can effectively convey effects of light and weather. To produce the milky, foam-topped waves, for example, he experimented with mixing flour paste into his washes.. Boats off the Coast, Storm Approaching. View of IJsselmonde Seen Across the New Maas 1635-1645 Netherlands. Even though he never ventured to Italy, Aelbert Cuyp distinguished himself as an artist who could evoke the golden light so often associated with southern Europe. Two of his works (View of IJsselmonde Seen across the New Maas (1967.383) and A View of Vianen with a Herdsman and Cattle by a River (2003.169), created around the same time, indicate how he achieved this effect in two different media. In both cases, Cuyp employed a restrained but highly evocative palette in which he selectively contrasted the dark brown elements of the foreground and the expansive gold-cast skies seen beyond the water in the middle ground. Although in the painting he achieved this effect by covering his entire canvas with pigment, it is remarkable to consider the atmospheric effects he created in the drawing with the strategic and minimal use of color on paper.. The Outer Harbor of Brest 1773 Henri Joseph van Blarenberghe French Between 1753 and 1765, in fulfillment of a commission from Louis XV, Joseph Vernet (1714-1789) completed highly complex, detailed views of many of the important ports of France. However, he abandoned the project before painting Brest, in Brittany.Later, when the secretary of state for the navy wished to present evidence of the building works in Brest, Louis Nicolas van Blarenberghe (1716-1794) was engaged. Between January 18 and April 2, 1773, six gouaches documenting the harbor and naval facilities at Brest were prepared jointly with his son Henri Joseph van Blarenberghe. Finished views were painted later. As Louis Nicolas was principally a miniaturist, the present canvas is attributed to the younger artist, who describes in compelling detail not only the military features of the port but its soldiers, sailors, and citizenry.. Coast Scene with a View of Civitavecchia 1638 Claude Lorrain (Claude Gellée) Claude Lorrain was the most famous and most sought-after landscape painter working in Rome in the 17th century. He made numerous plein air studies in the countryside around Rome and then incorporated his knowledge of nature and light into his painted compositions. This sheet is one of a pair of presentation drawings made for Pope Urban VIII who commissioned from the artist a pair of small octagonal paintings on copper depicting sites associated with papal building projects. This one was not executed in oil. The subject seems to have been replaced by Pastoral Landscape with Lake Albano and Castel Gandolfo, known through a painting in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (PD.950-1963). The pendant relates to a painting at the Petit Palais, Paris, Coast Scene with the Port of Santa Marinella (PDUT872), of the same size as the drawing.. Another boat, in the far right of the picture, is on its way to help. Meanwhile, a merchant ship in the distance heads out to battle the storm. As one of the great marine painters of the 1600s, Ludolph Backhuysen painted many dramatic scenes like this. A Dutch artist, he would naturally have been drawn to the sea as a subject, the oceans being the main source of food, trade, and military victories for the Dutch, enabling their prosperity. Though, as this painting shows, the sea was sometimes more foe than friend.
