Gustave Boyer (b. 1840) in a Straw Hat. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 21 5/8 x 15 1/4 in. (54.9 x 38.7 cm). Date: 1870-71.Early twentieth-century scholars identified this man with mutton-chop sideburns as Cézanne himself, but he is actually the artist's boyhood friend Gustave Boyer, a lawyer who sat for two other portraits around 1870-71. Here, his younger brother Achille poses as a dapper flneur, a fixture of Parisian society who watches the urban spectacle with an air of boredom and ironic detachment. Achille himself was something of a pretentious do-nothing, frequently running up debts and engaging in scandalous behavior. (He shot and wounded the husband of a former lover in front of the Paris stock exchange.)

This particular individual does not appear in any of those pictures, but there can be no doubt that he, like the models for the card players, was one of the workers at Jas de Bouffan, the Cézanne family estate in Aix-en-Provence..
