Study of a Woman with a Book. Artist: Charles Fairfax Murray (British, London 1849-1919 London). Dimensions: Sheet: 13 3/4 × 9 13/16 in. (35 × 25 cm). Date: 1883.Fairfax Murray trained under Edward Burne-Jones, worked for Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Morris, then lived in Italy between 1875 and 1886. There he acted as agent for London's National Gallery, and formed an important collection of old master drawings later acquired by J. Pierpont Morgan. This portrait likely represents someone in the family circle of Marie Spartali Stillman and her American husband William Stillman--Marie was a Pre-Raphaelite painter and the couple moved between London and Florence in the 1880s. He leans back slightly, with his left elbow resting on a table and his right hand brought to his chest in an elegant, stately manner. His likeness was drawn in black, white and some red chalk by the Dutch artist Jacob Backer, a portraitist as well as a painter of historical subject matter. The drawing is an example of Backers mature style, in which the artist had adopted the manner of portraiture, popularized by his fellow townsman, Bartholomeus van der Helst (1613-1670) in the 1640s. It is characterized by a certain degree of flamboyancy in the display of wealth and a bourgeois demeanor, as opposed to the more restrained and sober likenesses painted in previous decades. The sheet is a study, presumably used in preparation of one of Backers large group portraits.
