George Sand's Garden at Nohant. Artist: Eugène Delacroix (French, Charenton-Saint-Maurice 1798-1863 Paris). Dimensions: 17 7/8 x 21 3/4 in. (45.4 x 55.2 cm). Date: ca. 1842-43.During the 1840s Delacroix made three summer visits to Nohant in central France, where he stayed at the country home of his friend the writer Aurore Dudevant, better known by her pseudonym George Sand. This verdant view on the south side of the house, whose focal point is a simple stone table (or bench), was preceded by a pencil sketch that probably dates to 1842 or 1843 (Musée Carnavalet, Paris). Date: 1753.This picture and Dog Guarding Dead Game (71.89) were exhibited in the Salon of 1753, the last in which Oudry participated. Date: 1836.Cole inspired many of his colleagues, including his most important student, Frederic Edwin Church, to take up plein-air painting or sketching in pencil or oils. For Cole, the act of sketching outdoors went hand in hand with the close study of nature and was an essential tool in the creation of a significant studio painting. For The Oxbow, Cole made a pencil sketch on site and later painted this small oil sketch in his studio as he worked to establish the composition, color balance, and internal rhythm of the scene. A squiggle of paint at the lower right appears almost human--perhaps a first suggestion of the artist's presence in the landscape, as seen in his self-portrait in the final canvas (acc. no. 08.228). Date: 1760s.The nephew of Canaletto, by whom he was trained, Bellotto became a view painter of international renown. Between 1747 and 1758, he worked for the court of Dresden and this picture shows the nearby village of Pirna. Bellotto painted canvases representing Pirna with the Obertor for Elector Frederick Augustus II of Saxony and for his prime minister, Count Brühl, between 1753 and 1756.
