Dream of Arcadia is based on an 1838 painting by the schools “founding father,” Thomas Cole. It typifies the style in its naturalistic details and romanticized vision of nature as symbolic of Americas national destiny. Its subject—the classical paradise of Arcadia—perhaps reflects hopes for a world free of the prejudice and strife of pre-Civil War America. Duncanson settled in the Cincinnati area in about 1841. Cincinnati was then a hotbed of abolitionist activity, and home to a large population of free African Americans. American Art 1852

Landscape with the Ruins of the Castle of Egmond 1650-1655 Holland. The heroic but ephemeral edifices of humankind and the enduring power and grandeur of nature are evocatively expressed in this work by the landscape painter Jacob van Ruisdael. A shepherd and his ock are dwarfed by the ruins of a castle, a massive hill in the background, and dark, swollen clouds gathering overhead. Ruisdaelís skillful use of color also enhances the paintingís poetic effect. Other than the glowing terra-cotta of the ruins and the restrained use of creamy whites, his palette consists mostly of the greens and browns of nature. There is only one small point of bright color in the entire painting the shepherdís red jacket. Although the artistís choice of ruins as his subject followed an established pictorial tradition in the Netherlands, he was not concerned with topographical accuracy; indeed, the prominent hill behind the structure was a product of his imagination. Date: possibly 1636.This picture is accurately recorded in Claude's Liber Veritatis, the book of drawings the painter made to record his compositions and to protect himself against forgers and imitators. On the back of the drawing Claude noted that the picture was made for Paris, but the client is not named. In the eighteenth century, this painting belonged to Dr. Richard Mead, the famous collector in London. Then, it was called Morning and was paired with another Claude landscape entitled Evening, which had not been conceived as its pendant. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
