Porte-feuille instructif et amusant pour la jeunesse, À Vienne, Chez Antoine Pichler, 1807, natural history, juvenile works, Woods Hole, The illustration depicts an arrangement of fossilized specimens set into a natural stone backdrop. At the forefront, a detailed ammonite showcases its spiraled shell with distinct ribbing, symbolizing ancient marine life. Surrounding it are intricately illustrated fragments, including one featuring a stylized fish with elegant fins, suggesting it may have once swum in prehistoric oceans. Another section displays abstract, flowing patterns, possibly representing some form of cephalopod or coral. The surrounding stones are adorned with delicate floral motifs, adding a touch of whimsy to the geological display. Overall, the composition highlights the beauty and complexity of fossils, merging natural history with artistic interpretation.

The Shell (Conus marmoreus). Rembrandt was not immune to the 17th-century fascination with exotic natural curiosities: he even owned a large quantity of shells and marine inhabitants’. This example, which in Rembrandt’s time was listed as Stag’s Horn, doubtless belonged to his collection. In this etching he recorded the characteristic dark brown and white markings with utmost precision. Note that the actual shell is shown in reverse in the print.

Two Views of the Head (plate 4), in Myologie Complette en Couleur et Grandeur Naturelle 1746 Joseph Guichard Duverney Jacques-Fabien Gautier-Dagoty received a royal license for his technique of four-plate color printing in mezzotint, a process closely derived from the three-plate method of his teacher, Jacob Christoph Le Blon (to which Gautier-Dagoty added a plate printed in black or brown). Although he also made prints that reproduced paintings or depicted notable figures, Gautier-Dagoty's special interests lay in anatomy, botany, and zoologyfields that would be revolutionized by the publication of accurate color illustrations. He founded the first French illustrated scientific journal, and prepared large-scale publications such as Myologie complète en couleur et grandeur naturelle a treatise on the anatomy of muscles from which these views of the human head are taken..
