(14.4 x 21.9 x 1 cm). This forty-two-page sketchbook contains drawings by the history painter Peter Frederick Rothermel of scenes in Genazzano, Italy, forty miles east of Rome. He documented the local architecture, sculpture, landscape, and people, while also including sketches for narrative subjects. The costumes and daily life of the townfolk are captured in several skillful figure studies, including this image of a man leaning against a stone wall. American Art 1857

In this two-page spread depicting the church of Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Maggiore in Italy, Giffords precise and assured lines exemplify his skills as a draftsman. A practitioner of plein air sketching, the artist used these drawings as preparatory studies for paintings executed later in his studio. Marble grave stele of Antigenes end of the 6th century B.C. Greek, Attic Attic grave monuments of the end of the sixth century B.C. tend to be simpler than their earlier counterparts. In particular, the sculpted finials in the form of sphinxes are replaced by palmettes that are integral with the shaft. The figures, moreover, may be painted instead of carved in relief. It is enlightening to compare a representation such as this with contemporary vase-painting. The light figure against a darker background is comparable to the red-figure technique in pottery. Indeed, the influence of painted sculpture has been adduced in precipitating the change from black-figure to red-figure.. Marble grave stele of Antigenes 249058

(282.73 x 68.1 cm) (without roller), Ink and color on silk, China, 18th century, Cheng Ming was born in Shexian in Anhui province and lived and worked near Yangzhou. He was a noted poet and a student of the individualist artist Shitao, one of the greatest individualist literati painters of the seventeenth century. Individualist painters did not follow traditional norms of landscape painters, but created their own distinct style using different brushworks. The painting depicts a literati recluse visiting a scholarly friend in his wintry mountain retreat. The spiky calligraphic brushwork of the rocks is counterbalanced by Cheng's own poem, which reads

The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

(38.74 × 26.04 cm) (sheet, each, approx., vertical ōban, upright diptych), Woodblock print (nishiki-e); ink and color on paper, Japan, 19th century, This is the same motif as a triptych nearby that Yoshitoshi designed 25 years earlier, showing the monk Mongaku doing penance for 21 days under the icy waterfall at Mount Nachi. Instead of showing him reciting incantations to the deity Fudō Myō-ō, Yoshitoshi depicted Mongaku this time in the moment of his collapse when he is rescued by the deitys child attendants, Seitaka and Kongara. In the earlier triptych, Yoshitoshi captured foamy water with white spume but here renders the water like a cloud to emphasize that the divine beings have restored calm.
