Saint Cecilia Playing the Organ 1650s Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri) Italian Cecilia was a saint and virgin martyr believed to have lived in the second or third century. Brought up as a Christian, she took a vow of chastity and, on marrying a Roman nobleman, persuaded him to accept sexual abstinence. Patron saint of music, Cecilia is depicted here playing the organ, while an angel holds a narrow music book. The drawing may be preparatory for a painting now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, although the angel is absent in the executed version.While this drawing cannot be connected with an executed painting by Guercino, this subject was painted several times by the artist and members of his studio. This drawing is considered by Mahon and Turner (1989, no. 674) to have been the basis for an offset (Royal Library, Windsor, inv. no. 2965). Standing Female Figure in Armor Drawing Her Sword (Minerva or Bellona) ca. 1535-38 Parmigianino (Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola) Italian This figure sketch shows the goddess Minerva in plumed helmet and skirted Classical armor standing in three-quarter view facing left about to draw her sword from the scubbard. The drawings is thought to have been preparatory for the statuette of a Classical warrior depicted as a detail at right in Parmigianinos Portrait of Pier Maria Rossi, Count of San Secondo dated to 1535-38 (Museo del Prado, Madrid), for which another related study is in the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples. In comparison to the painted detail, however, the present sketch shows the figure as quite evidently female and with broader bodily proportions. As is typical of Parmigianino's late drawings, the present sketch is executed with bold, curved parallel hatching done with a fine pen. Peter Paul Rubens Flemish The first great altarpiece Rubens painted after his return from Italy was The Descent from the Cross, commissioned in 1611 for the chapel of the arquebusiers in the Antwerp Cathedral. The triptych was dedicated to Saint Christopher, the guild's patron saint, and the theme was the carrying of Christ. This early study is for the inside right wing, where it is Simeon, the high priest, who carries the infant Christ. Rubens used bold pen strokes to block out and then make changes in the positions of the figures; in the final painting, which is still in the cathedral at Antwerp, Rubens changed the places of Simeon and the prophetess Anna..
