Study in Draperies 1828-81 Romain Cazes This drawing of a loosened gown covering the legs of a lightly sketched woman comes from a group of eleven sheets once attribued to Frederic Lord Leighton, but now identified as by Romain Cazes. Cazes was a student of Ingres who painted murals in churches in both Paris and southwest France, and these drawings demonstrate his adherance to academic practice. The latter directs artists to make separate studies of posed nude figures and their garments as compositions are planned. The group were donated to The Museum by Albert Eugene Gallatin, an influential New York collector and critic who promoted "Art for Art's Sake," insisting that aesthetics, rather than narrative or moral concerns, underpins enduring art.. Study of a Woman and Child. Artist: Sir Joshua Reynolds (British, Plympton 1723-1792 London). Dimensions: sheet: 10 1/2 x 7 1/4 in. (26.7 x 18.4 cm). Date: 1745-92.The woman's seated pose is remarkably dynamic: as she turns to gaze over her shoulder, curls tumble from her coiffure, and folds of drapery spill across her lap, revealing slender legs crossed at the ankles. By contrast to the careful articulation of her face, her fingers are only schematically indicated, while the contours of the child's naked body are succinctly described in short strokes of black chalk. This rare compositional study by Sir Joshua Reynolds--the leading British portrait painter of the eighteenth century, first president of the Royal Academy, an influential theoretician of art, and a distinguished collector--is not related to any known painting. But its allusion to the Madonna and Child, and severely classicizing, Michelangelesque style link it to the artist's most accomplished grand-manner portraits of the

Youth in a Chariot with Attendant Young Woman ca. 1621-23 Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri) Italian This rather damaged sketch can be connected to a motif of secondary figures at the upper right of the fresco of Aurora on the ceiling of the Casino Ludovisi, Rome. This connection was pointed out by Carmen C. Bambach in February 2007. The group of figures, members of Aurora's entourage, appears at the upper right of the rectangular opening of Agostino Tassi's sotto in su architectural construction that frames the main scene. Specific points of comparison are a group of three figures with a more prominent young female, who points the way forward with an outstretched left arm and pointer finger. At the bottom right of the Museum's study is what could be the flowing drapery of a figure seen in the fresco who beckons Aurora towards the figure of Night. The figures of the Museum's drawing are conceived in the same direction as those of the fresco design and the setting is clouds.Instead

Henri Fantin-Latours drawings featured imaginative compositions, often inspired by the music of contemporary German composers. This sheet relates to the symphonic work Manfred by Robert Schumann (1848), a drama in which Manfred encounters apparitions while mourning his lost lover. Fantin used layers of dark charcoal to evoke the emotional tenor of his subject and to translate the experience of listening to Schumanns music using a visual medium.

Delacroix depicts the evangelist Johannes on Patmos, inspired by Rubens' altarpiece in Saint-Jean church in Mechelen, executed with brown pipe feather and brush, laved on August 9, 1850.
