Storm King, 1871 (from Sketchbook) ca. 1870 Daniel Huntington American The leading portraitist in New York during the post-Civil War period--and president of the National Academy of Design from 1862 to 1870 and from 1877 to 1890--Daniel Huntington was a conservative painter, a man highly respected by his clients and colleagues throughout his long career. Although he traveled widely and frequently during the mid- and late nineteenth century, he shunned new artistic concepts and styles. As a staunch academician in technique and manner, Huntington understood that proper draftsmanship was at the core of accomplished painting. He sketched throughout the course of his life and his extant drawings number over a thousand. This page is from one of Huntingtons sketchbooks that contains forty-one drawings in graphite, some in a panorama format. Textile Fragment 9th century This linen fragment executed in a tapestry woven design and embroidery depicts an eagle in a roundel. An embroidered pattern of evenly spaced circles framed by linear bands in the ground color can be seen on both ends of the fabric. Only remnants remain of other polychrome tapestry decorations, perhaps of smaller motifs. Such textiles with designs in roundels were commonplace in the Near East and prototypes can be found in Sasanian Iran and Coptic Egypt. This fragment has been ascribed to the Tulunid period through its characteristic color palette of olive, blue, and brown.. Textile Fragment 452536

Bamboo.Bamboo painting is said to have originated when a scholar was sitting in his study one night and noticed the shadows of bamboo plants in his garden projected onto the paper window of his study. He then replicated them in an ink painting. Bamboo is a metaphor for a scholars graceand resilience.

Decorative paneling from the Palace of Westminster ca. 1845-59 Designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin These decorative oak panels exemplify the designs of A.W.N Pugin, who was the leading exponent of the Gothic Revival style in England. Pugins work is central to the transformation in British design that began in the mid-nineteenth century. He admired what he saw as the honesty and purity of medieval art, and deplored the meaningless repetition of historical motifs. Pugin coined the phrase “Brumagen Gothic,” referring to “those inexhaustible mines of bad taste, Birmingham.” The carved oak panels for the Palace of Westminster were made for both the House of Lords and House of Commons and are just one component of a larger, Pugin-designed interior program, including brasswork (grill panels, large doors, candelabra and other light fixtures, hardware, and gallery railings), stained glass, tiles, and furniture.
